Bangladesh has received criticism for its employment of the "two-finger test" in rape investigations. This test consists of a physical examination of women who report rape during which a doctor inserts two fingers in the woman's vagina to determine whether the woman is "habituated to sex". This examination has its origin in the country's British colonial-era laws dating back to 1872. This deters many women from reporting rape. More than 100 experts, including doctors, lawyers, police, and women's rights activists, signed a joint statement in 2013 asking for the test, which they called "demeaning", to be abolished, as it "does not provide any evidence that is relevant to proving the offence."

82% of rural Bangladeshi and 79% of urban Bangladeshi men cited entitlement as their reason for rape. 61.2% of urban Bangladeshi men who had raped did not feel guilty or worried afterwards, and 95.1% experienced no legal consequences. 3.7% of men in rural Bangladesh had raped another man. 89.2% of urban Bangladeshi men answered 'agree' or 'strongly agree' to the statement 'if a woman doesn't physically fight back, it's not rape.'

Under-reporting on both sides obviously I would say (so who really knows what the crime rate for this really is given this is just what gets to the police i'e dotted and t's crossed etc)....but still I am all for not throwing stones from either of our glass houses at another one.....but it just comes up again and again somewhat inevitably given larger population + internet social media + MSM etc of India. Easy thing to bash India with I suppose if people want a feel....no matter quality of the box they stand on to do it.

I'm curious about the methodology. Given India's size I think it would be harder to record all the data. I mean, India lower than Singapore? Hard to believe.
Anyway, the rape rates have likely kept increasing so whatever the number is now in BD it's higher. Just when I thought the situation couldn't get any worse.

Like I said, its basically the official cases that make it to the police. Developing countries would of course fare worse on it to various extents than developed ones.

The rate on that spreadsheet for the USA is in the 30's....are we to believe its 15 times higher than India etc? Other developed countries (UK, Sweden etc) report high too, Sweden is pretty disturbing to see the trend, I assume its because of the refugee hosting crisis unfolding there. It is interesting to see Canada, Japan and others are really low though (like 2)....which ones are genuinely that low or have differing standards of rape reporting etc would need further analysis.

Many countries do not compile this for national official transparent use... or do not submit it to the UNODC it seems in first place (Pakistan, China etc)...doesn't mean they do not face the same issues that the rest of the developing world has in the under-reporting:

I was honestly just focusing on Asia. Didn't look at the western countries until now. AFAIK Sweden's definition of rape is pretty broad. So that's bound to make things look even bigger. Of course in the west fake rape cases also exist as we see in the now out of control Me too movement.

The whole subcontinent is dirty. Older areas more so. Pakistan is not an outlier. Unless you have tighter control - like China for example, dirtyness and slums (which exist in Pakistan as well), will not go away. Incidentally I visit Pakistan regularly, and have been to Orangi. There are close to two and half million people in that dump. I don't know what Pakistan govt. plans to do about that place...

The problem is lax attitude about industrial zoning, and enforcement of civic rules already on the books. And migration to cities by folks trying to find employment. In the boom years, Taipei, Taichung and most South Korean cities did not look a lot different.

Dhaka looks like this because a very large portion of Bangladesh population has gravitated here. Majority of export industries are located here. All govt. offices are also here.

We need to move these industries outside of Dhaka and decentralize govt. offices and facilities.
