Thar Block II Unearths Coal.

Sindh Engro Coal Mining (SECMC) on Sunday made history after unearthing the first layer of indigenous coal from its open-pit coal mine in Thar Coal Block II, at a depth of 140 meters (460 feet) below the surface.

The mining firm’s machinery took out the first layer from an estimated 2.04 billion tons of coal resources in Thar Coal Block II after successfully dewatering the second acquirer, five months ahead of schedule.

Engro Coal Mining (SECMC) on Sunday made history after unearthing the first layer of indigenous coal from its open-pit coal mine in Thar Coal Block II, at a depth of 140 meters (460 feet) below the surface.

The mining firm’s machinery took out the first layer from an estimated 2.04 billion tons of coal resources in Thar Coal Block II after successfully dewatering the second acquirer, five months ahead of schedule.

The successful extraction of the first coal seam not only proves that Thar’s indigenous coal is exploitable but can produce thousands of megawatts of cheap electricity for many decades, announced Shamsuddin Shaikh, Chief Executive Officer of SECMC after witnessing the coal unearthing at the bottom of the mine pit in Thar Coal Block II.

A Joint Venture between Sindh Government and six private sponsors including Engro Energy, Thal Ltd, Habib Bank Ltd, Hubco, and two Chinese companies CMEC and SPIC, SECMC is the largest Public Private Partnership in Pakistan to explore and develop Pakistan’s first open-pit coal mine with an annual output of 3.8 million tons. The entire coal production will be supplied to Engro Powergen Thar Limited (EPTL) which is putting up a 2x330 MW mine-mouth power plant which is targeting to start power generation before the end of this year. Both these projects are part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and are being constructed in collaboration with Chinese Contractors.

Congratulating the nation, especially the people of Thar, Mr. Shaikh said that it’s a matter of great pride for the nation that country’s indigenous energy resource will play a key role in circumventing the current energy crisis.
“This is the moment for which all Pakistanis had been waiting for the past 25 years, ever since coal was first discovered in Thar,” said Mr. Shaikh.
He thanked all the sponsors of this mega project, lenders, Federal Government and especially Sindh Government for providing whole-hearted support to make the dream of Thar a reality.

Commenting on the performance of SECMC, Mr. Shaikh added that we have completed 16 million safe man-hours while removing 90 million cubic meters of overburden (earth), and we did it 5 months ahead schedule, and targeting a savings of USD 110 million versus the budgeted cost, all of which is unprecedented for a mega project like this.

Sharing the future plans, Mr. Shaikh said that Company plans to rapidly expand the mine in Block-II to reach its optimum capacity to produce 5000 MWs by 2024 which will drastically reduce the coal price making Thar Block-II not only the cheapest block in Thar, it will be the cheapest base load energy resource in the Country with a power tariff of approximately 5 US cents per kWH. He requested both the Federal & Provisional Government to hold the development of all other coal blocks in Thar till SECMC’s Block II reaches its optimum capacity which will allow Thar coal to provide the cheapest electricity to consumers. Commenting on the CSR work being done by the Company in Thar, Mr Shaikh said that we are committed to making Islamkot an accelerated Taluka for attaining the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2024.

Speaking on the occasion, Syed Abul Fazal Rizvi, Chief Operating Officer of SECMC said that the coal in Thar is called lignite which is ideally suited for producing electricity. With a cumulative thickness around 26 meters, there are enough coal reserves in Block-II to produce 5000 MW for the next 50 years,” Rizvi said.

He said that the full-fledged coal supply will start from 3rd quarter 2018 and the first electron will be generated from the EPTL power plant in December this year.
He reiterated the commitment to continue serving the energy sector of Pakistan and especially the people of Thar who shall be the real beneficiary of this black gold.

Fantastic news. Please no "coal is bad" posts. It is but almost every developed country on earth has used coal to stand up and then when fully developed to begin diversifing about alternatives. The single biggest reason Pakistan has lagged behind India in heavy industry is the crippling lack of natural resources, in prticular iron and coal. I think only Japan has managed to stand up without having vast reserves of both.

Everywhere else where coal/iron was found adjacent to each other, South Yorkshire, UK. Ruhr, Germany, Saar, France. Pittsburg, USA. Donbas, Russia heavy industry took root. Even in India the Jamshedpur works are sited in the Indian coal/iron belt where the Tata family began their operations and now has become a giant.

Finally...the black gold is unearthed...it was found several feet below(must be around 100 feet), the top rich soil can be used for the agriculture purposes.

...and SECMC had empowered women like never before, Thar women driving the giant size dumpers.

BRAVO! Great news for Pakistan. Huge investments should be inivted at government level from overseas Pakistanis. A company should be built with shares of overseas Pakistan. It can prove as one of the economic pillars of Pakistan in next 15-20 years. It will provide jobs to hundreds of thousands like SNGPL and SSGC institutions.

Well, coal is no doubt a precious resource if used properly. We are living in 21st century and coal can be used for a lot of value added products. Coal can be used to for making carbon fibre and many chemicals... that are high in demand and sold at a much higher price than burning it for power production. BTW today wind energy is cheaper per unit than coal produced power and this technology is widely available in the world. Coal based power production is not only expensive but it is highly polluting and especially in Pakistan where the total forest cover is smaller than 2% of its land and suffering from lack of water and clean air, it will be devastating. Furthermore, we have alternate resources with are more abundant, cheap and very clean. We need to build dams and generate power from it and similarly we have ample wind and solar resource. I'm afraid that some bastard politicians will use this coal discovery an excuse to obstruct the construction of the dams.

We Should Not Waste This Coal On Power Generation But Rather Go For Fischer Tropsch And Produce Synthetic Fuels and SNG.

It Will Be A Much Better Deal.

Technologies Now Exist That Produce Diesel and Gasoline and At Under $30 Per Barrel

Totally Agree! Currently they want to generate 3960 MW electricity from this project which is a good deal. Even 5000 MW from this project is not a bad deal but coal gasification and other uses will help us to achieve self sufficiency. Thar Coal is the future. Dr Samar demanded 1 billion $ for 1000MW but bureaucracy proved him a failed chap.

Great. I hope sanity prevails and we explore more blocks of thar coal along with Gas, Crude Oil, Gold and Copper reserves.

Not Electricity Bro But Fuels Diesel Gasoline Jet Fuel Etc.

Imagine Diesel And Petrol At Under $30 Per Barrel When The International Price Is Above $70 Per Barrel.Massive Savings Plus Our Exports All Off A Sudden Become Cost Competitive

Yes! Coal gasification is the process in which coal is converted into natural gas and diesel. This project can become a home to different types of industries. A hybrid industrial zone with million good jobs.

.
Coal gasification should be the goal.
