Thai police arrest suspect in Bangkok bombing
By Kocha Olarn and Laura Smith-Spark, CNN
Updated 1312 GMT (2012 HKT) August 29, 2015

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN)Thai police have arrested a suspect in a bombing that killed 20 people and wounded scores more at a shrine in Bangkok this month, authorities said Saturday.

The man, also suspected of involvement in a second blast a day later in Bangkok, was arrested at an apartment in a suburb of Bangkok, police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thavornsiri said.

However, he is not the man in a yellow T-shirt and dark-framed glasses who was identified from surveillance video as the chief suspect in the bombing, Prawut said.

"The man we have is not the man in the sketch, but we believe he is part of the network which carried out the two bomb incidents," he said.

Prawut initially said the suspect arrested Saturday was a Turkish national. But he subsequently told CNN: "At first we thought he is Turkish. But we just found out two Turkish passports he is holding are all fake.

"We also found many empty fake passports, also various kinds of evidences."

Prawut said investigators hunting for clues had "also found the same type of ball bearings in this man's apartment."

High ranking police officers, forensic experts and army personnel were all seen outside the building shortly after news of the arrest broke.

The apartment is in the Nong Jok suburb, an area known to house a large Muslim community.

The deadly explosion at Bangkok's Erawan Shrine -- a spot popular with tourists and locals -- wreaked havoc on August 17. The second blast, which occurred at a pier on the Chao Phraya River that flows through Bangkok, did not cause any casualties.

No claim of responsibility
Authorities have narrowed the description of the main suspect in the first blast to an unidentified foreigner who was caught on surveillance video hiding a backpack under a bench at the shrine minutes before the bomb detonated.

The video footage showed a man in a yellow T-shirt and dark-framed glasses.

At least 10 people may have taken part in the bombing, but the attack is unlikely to be linked to international terrorist groups, Thai authorities said.

Police said a week ago that they no longer believed that three other people seen near the main suspect on surveillance video were involved in the attack.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the bombing. Thai authorities haven't said what they think the motive for it might have been, other than making vague references to unspecified people or groups who want to hurt Thailand's tourism industry and economy.

Thai security forces are sharing information with Interpol, the global police organization, and with intelligence agencies from allied countries, officials said.

Royal Thai Police Commissioner Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung said last week that he believes "several teams" were involved in the preparation and execution of the attack, which killed at least 20 people and wounded more than 120.

"This operation was carried out by a big network," he said.

Police offered a reward for information leading to the suspect's arrest, but it's not clear if this was a factor in Saturday's operation.

Foreign visitors among blast victims
Bangkok, which was convulsed by political unrest last year, has experienced small-scale bomb and grenade attacks in the past but nothing of the magnitude of the shrine blast. Two devices exploded at an upscale shopping mall in February but didn't cause any casualties.

The shrine is a major draw situated at a bustling intersection near a large shopping mall.

At least seven people from other Asian countries were reported to be among the dead as well as one Briton. The site is popular among Buddhists as well as Hindu and Sikh members of Thailand's Indian community.

CNN's Kocha Olarn reported from Bangkok and Laura Smith-Spark wrote from London.

Fake Turkish passports? Sure. But they would be valid if the holder "peacefully" travels to Turkey. The “fake Turkish passports" have been sold to Uyghurs who can afford with less than 10,000USD...

If Thai police tells the guy that he will be handed over to China he would start to talk. Our men are not nice dressed with girlie looks...8-)

. .
What a gay picture. Duck face idiot. Anyway, hang him AND his parents. If he has offspring, hang them too. The human world shouldn't tolerate SUBhuman offspring.

. . .
Another Flamewar begins and a couple Turkish members will be banned just wait for it.

Arent you guys capable of reading the OP?
Not the greatest strength of angry Chinese posters.
The Turkish Embassy in Beijing just give the Passport to the Chinese who never been in Turkey. And with these can they not direct go to Turkey from Beijing. That's why they go to Thailand and Vietnam first.
And the Turkish Embassy in these country will give them Visa anyway.

So I say, Turkish Embassy do a great job.

Report: More than 100,000 fake Turkish passports given to ISIL

April 09, 2015, Thursday/ 17:49:20/ TODAY'S ZAMAN / ISTANBUL
ISIL) militants were given more than 100,000fake Turkish passports in order to travel to Turkey and then enter Syria to join ISIL, a daily reported on Thursday.

According to a story in the Meydan daily, A.G., an aide of Nurali T., a Uyghur Turk working for ISIL to provide militants with passports worldwide, Nurali T.'s office in İstanbul's Zeytinburnu district functions as an ISIL passport office. Each passport was sold for $200, A.G. told Meydan.

More than 50,000 Uyghur Turks came to Turkey with these fake passports from China via Thailand and Malaysia and entered Syria after staying a day in İstanbul, Meydan reported. A.G. claimed that most of the Uyghurs with fake passports were caught by police in Turkish airports but they were released in Turkey after their passports were seized. “The Uyghurs' release in Turkey is due to a secret [little-known] Turkish law on Uyghur Turks. More than 50,000 Uyghurs joined ISIL through this method,” A.G. added.

A.G. further said that Nurali T. organizes recruits from around the world from his İstanbul office. Militants who entered Turkey with these fake passports are hosted either in hotels or guesthouses for a day before they join ISIL in Syria, A.G. said.

The Turkish government's stance toward ISIL has so far been ambiguous. The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government has been accused of supporting the terrorist organization by turning a blind eye to its militants crossing the border and even buying its oil. There have also been claims that Turkey has sent weapons to opposition groups fighting the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria. The NATO ally has also been facing a backlash for its reluctance to join US-led coalition efforts to eliminate ISIL, feeding speculation that this reluctance may be an indicator that some Turkish officials are ideologically close to the terrorist group.

Based on a 2014 report, Sezgin Tanrıkulu, deputy chairman of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) said that ISIL terrorists fighting in Syria have also been claimed to have been treated in hospitals in Turkey. However, publicly, Turkish authorities have strongly condemned the terrorist acts of ISIL militants and say these actions have nothing to do with Islam.

Turkey has 900km border with Syria, 40 million tourists arrive annually it isnt very hard to sneak in as tourists and then disappear.

Those 3 girls from UK joined isis, the footage from Istanbul Airport show that it isnt easy to identify terrorists just from their appearance.

Who said Gülen is a Cult, why can a Cult still have media and company in Turkey?
Gülen himself is living in exile in US, he had a lot schools all over the world where he basically recruited educated people, Erdogan and Gülen were buddies till recently but they somehow broke with eachother and Erdogan declared war against his cult, he closed their schools in Turkey and arrested a lot of his people, the problem with media is the outcry of censonship from Europe and US even is the media belongs to a cult.
Thats also the reason why his media is spreading BS, 100'000 fake passports? Dont tell me you believe this BS.

BTW: Turkey again striked isis positions today but this time as part of the coalition.
