CHENNAI: The tranquil backwaters of Alappuzha, advertised as the perfect setting to lazily watch houseboats that glide past, is the home town of DRDO project director Tessy Thomas, who guided a team of scientists to successfully test Agni-V, the fiercest weapon in India's armour.

A rare woman in a male bastion, the 48-year-old was hooked on to science and mathematics from school days, especially wonder-struck at the rocket launches from Thumba on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram.

"The world of missiles opened up for me after I happened to be picked as one of 10 youngsters from around the country for a DRDO programme in 1985," Thomas told ET in a telephone interview, while awaiting a flight from Bhubaneswar after being the toast of the nation earlier in the day.

Right after she landed in DRDO, everything just happened, she says. And that includes a stint as faculty for guided missiles for DRDO in Pune, and having former President APJ Abdul Kalam as her director.

Her own career went ballistic, when she headed the Agni-IV team as project director for vehicles and mission, and was project director (mission) for the more sophisticated Agni V launch.

What does she have to say about a country which has women defence mission directors and, at the same time, rampant female infanticide? "Science shows no gender discrimination, and in that sense offers hope to a society where discrimination is practised.

Here in DRDO, we have a good example of a number of women scientists, who try and balance work and family," she says. Her husband Saroj Kumar Patel is a naval officer based in Mumbai, and son Tejas - named after India's light combat jet - is completing his engineering in Vellore.

Thomas would ideally like to unwind with a game of badminton and some cooking, but "that hasn't happened over the past two years", thanks to the latest editions of the Agni missile programme.

Now that Agni-V has been successfully test launched, would she care more for the trajectory of the shuttle ****? "Well, I now have my sights on the multiple independent re-entry vehicle," says the multi-tasking scientist.

Back home in Alappuzha, where her mother stays, the land phone rings incessantly after Tessy Thomas' contribution to India's pride at Wheeler Island. Yet, she may not get time to relax and have a backwater cruise one of these days.

LOL are you going to divert Russian civilian space rocket technology to make your MIRV too? What a humiliation for india!

Goddammit...your sources are your biased threads you start around here to make
a few incapable guys feel safe of our missiles?

When our latest 13-warhead MIRVs would be raining nukes on your panda land, whatcha gonna do
starting threads?? Your missile defences are pathetic at best.

Of course it matters. You can't make them on your own. So you literally can't make Agni-5 on your own. You are limited by your inventory of imported guidance systems.

If you had imported the components, and then indigenously manufactured them, it would be a different story.

What makes you think we will run out of our inventory ?

How many ICBM's does a country make ? 50 or 100 or 250......why cant we have an inventory that meets those numbers.

Russia and Israel are the only two countries whose components have been used...they are both friendly to India. Why will they not provide us with what we want?

LOL at india's humiliation again...... just like commonwealth games boasting all ended up in shame

We "import" hundreds of them and geez that should be enough to wipe out thousands of your cities ... happy now :hitwall:

It costs a lot of money to import guidance systems. This will limit india's ability to actually mass produce and deploy Agni-5. China can also put pressure on Russia, because we have friendly relations. As for Israel, we can threaten to give Pakistan guidance systems for longer-ranged missiles if Israel doesn't stop helping india's ballistic missile program.

So you are giving CCTV report as source
BTW the main article you pointed to say India import some electronic parts. It's your great CCTV says India divert tech. You know what the rest of world say about that source
Find something Russian or USA or EU report to support your claim.
China UK and Russia to get together ??? I think situation is little different from your imagination. Everyone is getting together to put COMMUNIST nation to it place

You give a number as to how many A5s are required to blow up all major chinese cities we will arrange for that many guidance systems for our A-5s , leave the money part we will take care of that :butcher:

I guess the only language Sinochallenged understands is the language sinochallenged speaks

China has friendly relations with Russia. After we have a chat with Putin, he will be unimpressed by india diverting peaceful space rocket components to ballistic missiles, especially when these Agni-5 ballistic missile can easily be used to target Moscow!
