Tesla’s recent price adjustments to its Gigafactory Shanghai-made Model 3 seems to be very effective, with reports from the electric vehicle community hinting that Tesla stores in China are starting to see overwhelming demand for the all-electric sedan. Considering the strong reception of the now-cheaper Model 3, Tesla’s numbers from China may very well surprise this fourth quarter.

Chinese social media responded strongly to Tesla China’s price adjustments for the Model 3, especially the Standard Range Plus variant, which now uses LFP batteries. A social media post from a Tesla representative, for one, remarked that the company’s stores have become so flooded with new Model 3 orders that employees hardly have time to eat meals or converse with customers.

With the Model 3’s price cuts taking effect today, Tesla has rolled out a special perk for customers who recently purchased the all-electric sedan under its old pricing. The electric car maker’s 7-day money-back guarantee applies to China, of course, which means that customers who wish to return their cars could do so without any problem. For customers who wish to keep their recently-purchased Model 3s, Tesla has offered a goodwill gesture in the form of three years’ worth of free Supercharging.

Such a gesture may very well go a long way into establishing more rapport with the buying public in China. Three years’ worth of free Supercharging is quite valuable as well, especially if customers are fond of taking long trips in their vehicles. Overall, these efforts from the company could help build and affirm brand loyalty, which matters quite a lot in markets such as China.

Tesla has been selling electric cars in China for years, though for the longest time, its vehicles were considered out of the price range of mainstream buyers due to the premium price of the Model X and Model S. This changed with the Model 3, and with the introduction of locally-made variants of the all-electric sedan, Tesla became more attainable to a larger number of car buyers.

Tesla’s shift to LFP batteries and the recent price adjustment effectively brought the Model 3 in the same price range as rivals like the Xpeng P7, which previously held a price advantage over the entry-level Tesla. The electric car maker already as the advantage in tech and reputation, and with the Model 3 becoming just as affordable or even cheaper than its competitors, local EV makers in China would likely have to work extra hard for their place in the electric car market.

Tesla in China uses the standard GB charger while in the US they use a proprietary charger incompatible with every other cars standard SAE charger.

The Tesla price in China is lower than in the US and more compatible with existing infrastructure.

You have that all backwards. Tesla Superchargers have the proprietary charger connector. Which means to charge a Nissan Leaf you'd have to buy an expensive adapter.

However you can charge a US Tesla at non-Tesla chargers with a simple pop-on SAE J1772 adapter that comes standard with the purchase of a Tesla.

Here are some videos showing the situation. The disadvantage in the US is with charging non-Teslas at Tesla Superchargers.

Nissan Leaf owner needs expensive adapter to use a proprietary Tesla Supercharger

Tesla owner popping on a simple adapter so he can use a SAE J1772 charging station.

In China Teslas come with 2 plugs instead of using an adapter. So you can easily charge them.

The first is the European Mennekes Type 2 and then the second is the Chinese GB/T,

Reduction from how much to how much?

Hahaha

Basically, Tesla does not have their own battery, they use Panasonic battery for majority of their models, and CATL LFP battery for the made in China models.
For the price, I think it is comparable to the price in the US, the model 3 starts from MSRP 249,900 cny or ~36,800 usd...

Buying batteries is not unusual. Most carmakers buy other stuffs as well: tires, electrics, navigation. Almost 40k USD for a electric car is not cheap. Tesla builds a factory here in Germany but Tesla will have tough times to compete with Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, BMW, VW. The Germans still favor German cars. Unpatriotic if buying foreign cars.

You know battery is the most important key parts for EV?
Sure it is not cheap for an EV, but it is sold twice or even 3 times the price elsewhere other than China and the US...For example, in vn?
And sure, we have much more value for money options, like this CRV size SUV pure EV from Xpeng:

Tesla’s lead in the Chinese EV market won’t last long. Domestic companies like Nio and BYD will surpass Tesla in the world’s largest EV market.
Precisely, the only thing leading is tesla model 3 start selling much earlier.

Xpeng P7 and Han EV just started selling in June and July only. But their sales result are very encouraging. Precisely Tesla model 3 price reduction is becos they know the threat of Xpeng P7 which is price lower than Tesla 3. And now they try to match it.

End of year Chinese EV monthly sale will be the crucial verdict of who is more popular in China. The current problem for Xpeng is to ramp up P7 production.

P7 beats tesla 3 in everything from range. L3 autonomous parking, sound proof, sound system and internal space. It's no brainer for Chinese to pick Xpeng P7 over model 3. Even in Europe, there are many anticipation of P7 to be sold there.

Ok why don’t you make good chinese cars by chinese batteries? Why people buy Tesla with chinese batteries?

Stupid question.
BYD, NIO, Xpeng, and EVs from other traditional Chinse car companies all sell well in China. Even the Lixiang one sold ~3,500 per month, which has a higher price tag of 320,000 cny, than the model 3... Same with the NIO EVs (4,000 sold per month)...

Tesla has an early start in building high-end EVs. It is just like Apple in making smart phones, but Chinese EV makers like BYD, NIO, Xpeng, etc. will take the equivalent positions of Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo, etc...

XPeng P7

It will be gameover when the Tesla full self-driving rolls out.
I'm sure there is already a swapout kit which removes the steering wheel and adds a new plush interior.

$25,000 for a car that drives itself.

so far only Waymo has released it to the general public

Self driving won't be a thing for a long time, regulations won't allow it.
