Another suicide attack in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A man was killed and 13 others, including nine cops, sustained injuries in a hand grenade-cum-suicide attack on a police party in Lateefabad area on Ring Road on Thursday night, police said.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Safwat Ghayyur told the media men that a police party was on a routine duty on Ring Road in the jurisdiction of Faqirabad police station when unknown miscreants hurled a hand grenade at the cops, injuring one of them.
“They communicated to the police control about the incident and called for extra resources,î he said and added that two police mobiles were sent to the place of incident.
He added that in the meantime a suicide bomber came nearer a police pick-up and blew himself up.
The blast destroyed two police mobiles, a rickshaw and a motorcycle. Heavy police deployment reached the scene and cordoned off the area and closed Ring Road for traffic. The CCPO further said that one body was found at the spot whose identity was yet to be ascertained. Besides, two legs, most probably of the suicide bomber, were also found. Personnel of the Bomb Disposal Squad also recovered a pressure cooker and explosive material from the nearby fields.
About injured persons, Safwat said that 13 persons sustained injuries, nine of them policemen, and four civilians. The injured were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital where condition of three cops — Sakhawat Shah, Ameer Muhammad and Maqsood Shah — was stated to be critical. Emergency was imposed in the hospital.
Talking to a private news channel, NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain linked the incident to the military operation in Waziristan tribal agency. ìItís reaction to the ongoing military operation in Swat,î he said and termed the incident as a desperate action on the part of the besieged militants in various parts of the country.
APP adds from Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani have strongly condemned the grenade and suicide blast on Ring Road in Peshawar. The president and the prime minister in their separate messages expressed their grief and shock over the loss of precious human lives and injuries caused by the attack.
They said the government was committed to fight terrorism and militancy and such cowardly acts of terrorists will not weaken the governmentís resolve to eliminate the menace. They directed the concerned authorities to ensure the provision of best medical care to those injured in the blast. The president and the prime minister also ordered the authorities to probe the incident and submit a report.

PESHAWAR: The shootout between miscreants and security forces lasted for one hour on the Ring road, the sensitive area of the provincial capital, which in turn, left two attacks killed while their seven accomplices were arrested and one miscreant was injured on Thursday night, Geo news reported.
According to sources,
the firing in front of Qila Balahisar on G.T Road commenced following suicide attack on the Ring road here after which, miscreants had arrived on Khyber Road and tried to barged into the residence of Core Commander Peshawar but security forces retaliated on the high time, killing two miscreants, injuring one while seven their associates were nabbed.
A suspected person was also reportedly managed to enter sensitive area which is being traced meanwhile, exchange of fire has come to halt but people are still panicked by the incident, sources added.
The district administration said situation in under control, sources concluded.
