Bomb blasts in Pakistani garrison town kill 16

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, Sept 4 (Reuters) - A bomb on a bus believed to be carrying Pakistani Atomic Energy Commission employees in the city of Rawalpindi killed at least 12 people on Tuesday, military and government officials said.

A second bomb went off on a motorbike in the city, where the Pakistani army has its headquarters, killing at least four people, police said.

"The blast occured at 7.20 a.m. (0220 GMT) and 12 to 13 people are dead," said a military official, who declined to be identified, referring to the bus blast, which went off about one kilometre (half a mile) from army headquarters.

Pakistan has seen a surge of militant violence since July, when commandos stormed a radical mosque in the capital, Islambad, which adjoins Rawalpindi, and a peace pact broke down with militants in the North Waziristan region on the Afghan border.

While most of the violence has been in the northwest, there were two suicide bomb attacks in Islamabad in July.

The violence comes as Pakistan is entering a period of political uncertainty, with the army chief and president, General Pervez Musharraf, preparing to try to secure a new term and his opponents vowing to end his rule.

Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema said the bus was believed to be carrying employees of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.

But military spokesman, Major General Waheed Arshad, said authorities were trying to determine which department the people worked for.

"It's terrorism because innocent people were killed in both blasts," Arshad said.

The bus was completely destroyed and mutilated bodies lay on the street, a witness said.

Soldiers cordoned off the area. (Additional reporting by Kamran Haider, Zeeshan Haider)

How much do you want to bet that RAW is using its full potential in the current situation of Pakistan?

:D Yeah, RAW is responsible for everything that goes wrong in Pakistan. India is trying to create havoc in Pakistan the same way (according to Indians) ISI was involved in the Hydrabad blasts.

Well, ISI wouldn't use its personnel to kill innocent civilians. Thats a totally different story. Currently, we are seeing attacks on military personnels and infrastructure. ;)

At least 24 people have been killed in two bomb blasts near the Pakistani military headquarters in the city of Rawalpindi, the military says.
The first explosion took place on a bus carrying defence employees in the town near Islamabad, killing 17 people.

Shortly afterwards, a motorcycle bomb exploded in a market, killing seven people.

Attacks by militants have increased since the army stormed the Red Mosque in Islamabad in July.

It had been occupied by pro-Taleban extremists and at least 100 people were killed during the siege and subsequent military operation.

Since then, suicide attacks and bombings, particularly in the tribal areas, have claimed the lives of at least 60 Pakistani soldiers.

The BBC's Damian Grammaticas, in Islamabad, says these latest attacks will cause particular concern because they have happened in what is a military zone.

They come at a time of great political uncertainty in the country with former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto promising to return to the country to challenge the rule of President Pervez Musharraf.

'Huge bang'

At least 66 people have been injured in the two attacks, officials said.

The first explosion occurred at 0720 (0220 GMT).

At least 17 defence employees were killed when a bomb tore through their bus near Qasim market in Rawalpindi.

Eyewitnesses said the bus was completely destroyed by the blast which could be heard across the city.

The roof of the bus and all it's windows were blown away.

"There was a huge bang, then I saw the bus in a mangled heap. Body parts were scattered across the road and there was blood everywhere," witness Mohammad Tahir told AFP.

Television pictures showed rescue workers at the scene, trying to cut open the wreckage to pull out injured people and bodies.

The second blast happened about three kilometres (two miles) away when a suspected motorcycle bomb exploded in the city's RA Bazaar.

"We only know that it was a motorcycle bomb. It exploded with a big bang," a police official was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Military spokesman Maj-Gen Waheed Arshad said authorities were trying to determine which department the people on board the bus worked for.

"It's terrorism because innocent people were killed in both blasts," Maj-Gen Arshad said.

At least 66 people have been wounded in the two attacks, he said.

Its getting bigger and worrisome. The attacks have a definite pattern of attacking the military than the civilians, a clear indication that the guys behind this are 'sane enough to know there targets'. And for the same reason i dont think so this can be called terrorism but a genuine struggle againt the PA.

How much do you want to bet that RAW is using its full potential in the current situation of Pakistan?

For me i'll bet 100% that it is indeed RAW that is using its full potential to destabilize pakistan, before chinese were killed and the report that was presented clearly showed that Indias RAW and american CIA were involved in it and now comes this, i wonder why havent the government taken any strong measures in this regard where at number of occasions the interior minster has said that foreign hands are involved, what the **** are they waiting for?:hitwall:
I seriously hate when for personal political gains, governments are reluctant to act as they would other wise had. Its a shame for both the opposition and the current government for their pathetic attitude making the country sacrifise.

This is f'in bullshit. I'm getting angrier by the day. Pakistan needs to really do something.

What you propose PA should do ?? Most of the blasts are Islamic/Talibaan/Alqaeda oriented. Pakistani public supports and succours them. Look what happened at Lal Masjid, the people who painted it red when it reopned, were not extremists but majority were residents of sector-6. Did these people care that Lal Masjid mob had fought PA in a pichted battle and killed a few soldiers in the bargain??

People get what they deserve and quite a lot dont deserve Pakistan, neither do they care a lot about the nation. Another manifestation of the national malaise was evident from the fact that no condemnation or response from any political party or religious leaders when the video of a Pakistani soldier being beheaded was released !!. How much more dead can we get as a nation!!.

Pakistanis are the only idiots who dont give damn for their nation but are willing to blow themselves up for the sake of Al-Qaeda.

Yeah genuine struggle! my foot. And what would you call the struggle in kashmir and other parts of india?

If as bull says that it is a struggle against the army then why target atomic agency staff who are viewed as hero’s by even the most die hard outfits. Why were they precision targeted? This reeks of outside involvement.

Very strong words indeed.

Killing of civilians is never a part of a genuine struggle, thats all i meant. Any struggle that targets the combat forces deserves a good hearing and the ones that target civilians good spanking.
