UPDATE: 5:22am PDT—

Keep in mind, BAMS-D, like the Global Hawk and the MQ-4C to a degree, has a zero penetration mission. It doesn't fly into contested airspace. It is literally a sitting duck. The only reason it would do so would be if it was off the leash or there was a major navigational malfunction. It is far more likely Iran just shot it out of international airspace as the Pentagon states.

Based on what we are seeing from reports, Trump doesn't want a war under his term as he seeks reelection in 2020. However, oil sanctions are not helping. Iran will continue with actions in the region to protest the oil sanctions. So either oil sanctions are removed or Iran will escalate measures to try convincing world it is not worth it. If US does limited strikes, Iran will not respond but will do something like target more oil tankers days or a week later. So this situation will continue until oil sanctions removed or regional war takes place involving Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Israel and the UAE.

Iran would be stupid not to respond if the US does strike. It would be an opportunity for them to target oil installations in the region.
