What's new

Tendulkar, Kapil, Gavaskar, Sehwag named in Greatest All Time Test XI

And Sehwag being the only 3 rd person to score 2 triple centuries since the inception of test cricket. The other two being Lara and Don.

Sehwag

matches- 86 innings- 148 Runs-7611 HS-319 Avg-53.60 100-22 50-26 SR-81.85

The consistency with that SR is something rare and that too for a test opening batsman ...
He sets up the game for you... and also look at the conversion rate

Also 3 tripple centuries along with the record for fastest tripple century

the butcher of najafgarh and multan ka sultan. enough said!

You gotta listen to Umar Gul when he says that "in the first three overs Sehwag mentally destroyed me and after that I could not get back into the game" (WC semis). His value lies in not only scoring runs but mentally destroying the opposition by his daredevilry.

He is by far one of the best openers cricket has ever seen.

As I previously said I would even trade Sachin's slot for Dravid, but not Sehwag's.

Sehwag does not even have the top ten batting averages in test cricket. And btw, we are talking about the greatest, all time test XI, not just present times.

The top ten batting averages in the world belong to:

1. Don Bradman (retired)
2. I.J.L. Trott (present)
3. R.G. Pollock (retired)
4. G.A. Headley
5. H. Sutcliffe
6. E. Paynter
7. K.F. Barrington
8. E.D. Weekes
9. W.R. Hammond
10. J.H. Kallis (present, but not on the list)

Even Kumar Sangakkara has a higher batting average than Sehwag, & he's played more test games than him as well. The thing you are talking about Sehwag & Umar Gul was his one day batting as well. I don't think Sehwag even has the top 20 batting averages in test games. So how is he on the list of the greatest all time test XI?

U should compare him with the opening batman only, because he is selected for that position only, now tell me how many opening batmen have better average than him ?? only few ??

there's another parameter you left out that's strike rate which is so uncommon for test batsman and that makes him an ideal opener, the list is made according to ones batting techniques suited better for the game.

There is a difference between having someone in the current top test XI (which Sehwag deserves to be in), & having someone in the greatest all time test XI, something Sehwag does not deserve to be in (as shown by statistical evidence).

Pollock played like how many test matches? 25 maybe? Too low.

Bradman what conditions he played in? In Asia spinning tracks? etc etc

Strike rate is secondary to batting average, especially in the test game. Sangakkara probably has a similar strike rate to Sehwag, but a higher batting average (even though he's played more games). Kallis has a much higher batting average than Sehwag, why isn't he on the list?

Pollock isn't being mentioned, we're discussing why Sehwag has been chosen over Sangakkara & Kallis, even though both have played more games than him, & have better statistics than him in the test game.

Becaue they are not openers :hitwall:

An opener is a specialist position and not everyone with "better average" can be good openers.

Anyway its impossible to convince as the only one that you can see wrong in Sehwag's inclusion is his flag and nothing else. No amount of justification will change your opinion.

i think sehwag & kapil don't fit in this list, world cricket has produced many great test openers & fast bowlers than these both. both of them are indeed great but not greatest.

P.S- my personal views

we are talking about the opening batman not the middle order batman, don't u understand the difference or a specialist opener and a middle order batman ?

There are more than 10 openers that have higher batting averages than Sehwag as well. Sehwag is not even in the top 10 for batting averages in test games for openers.
