‘LCA clearance may take time’

UPDATED: JULY 30, 2018 22:46 IST

The target for the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas to achieve Final Operational Clearance (FOC) is December 2018, the Government informed Parliament on Monday. However, official sources said this is likely to slip further to the middle of next year as there are several capabilities yet to be validated.

“Production for 20 LCA will be taken up after FOC by Aeronautical Development Agency, for which current target is December 2018,” Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) had signed two contracts with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, one for 20 aircraft in Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) configuration signed on March 31, 2006 to be completed by December 2011 and another for 20 aircraft in FOC standard signed on December 23, 2010 which was to be completed by 2016. The IAF constituted the first LCA squadron with two IOC configuration aircraft in 2016 and as of July 2018 only nine aircraft have been inducted. The deadline for FOC was missed again last month.

“The next target for the FOC is December, but that may likely be delayed by another six months as several parameters are yet to be validated,” an official source said.

Yet to be demonstrated

The major capabilities that are yet to be demonstrated on the Tejas are gun firing, air-to-air refuelling and new data-linked software defined radios, among others. The IAF has conveyed that its wants new data links as a standard feature on the FOC variant as communications are an essential feature for an aircraft to operate in a network-centric environment.

Dr. Bhamre said that the IOC aircraft is currently capable of “undertaking air defence operations and conventional ground attack with heavy bombs is feasible.”

We have a dedicated thread on PDF for Tejas... by the way... take it with a bit of salt...

LCA Tejas production line ramped up, 16 fighters being manufactured every year

Wellll it become corruption black hole for country who ever in govt start washing their hands in tejas ganga this project will not be finishing for ever

The major capabilities that are yet to be demonstrated on the Tejas are gun firing, air-to-air refuelling and new data-linked software defined radios,
So only three things are left. Very little.
I think current VHF/UHF is enough given our threat perception.

there appears to be a very very...very hard push to make it viable. almost matter of pride now, which didn't matter for over 2 decades.

No guns and without air refuelling it can barely reach the border.....so yea very little things....until come next deadline. !!!
You do realize JF-17 doesn't have Air to Air refueling.

JF-17 has not yet demonstrated air to air refuelling.
The subject here is Tejas and not JF-17....however for the absent minded here enlighten yourself.

And guns are of little use nowadays.

That's what they initially said about F-35.

10 years after inducted in PAF jf 17 demonstrates its refuelling capability that too in pre induction mode (yellow colour):agree:

Oh its available on all block 2s but anyway, it's still better than being on trailer.

Lets just stick to Tejas shall we?

If jf in its current form is accepted then how come Tejas is obslate...

Are you sure that all if the blk2 have air to air refueling capacity??
Not all but a large number. I stand corrected. Though, they can be modified for it whenever required.

Pakistan was forced to induct 50 JF-17 without air to refuelling. That itself is a major embarrassment.
Also if Tejas is on trailer how did it complete 4000?+ Flight
Ask anyone, JF 17 is a pride for us.
You can be proud of Tejas for whatever accomplishment it has achieved till now.
