ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani Taliban confirmed on Thursday that their number two in command, Deputy Chief Waliur Rehman was killed in a US drone strike. The terrorist outfit also announced it is withdrawing its dialogue offer to the new government.

Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan told The Express Tribune that the TTP would take revenge over the killing of their deputy chief.

He said the Taliban consider the Pakistani government fully responsible for drone strikes in the region, because the government is passing information to the United States.

“I confirm the martyrdom of Waliur Rehman Mehsud in a drone strike on Wednesday. We are shocked at the martyrdom of our leader but are proud of his sacrifices,” Ehsanullah Ehsan said.

“We had sincerely offered peace dialogue to the government but we strongly believe that the government has a role to play in the drone strikes,” he added.

The TTP have reportedly chosen a new deputy commander to replace Rehman.

“There was absolute consensus over Khan Said,” one Pakistani Taliban member said.

Peace effort at an end?

While Waliur Rehman’s death is a major blow for the militants, it could be also viewed as a setback for incoming Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s efforts to end violence.

He criticised drone strikes during the election campaign, describing them at one point as a “challenge” to Pakistan’s sovereignty. Sharif also offered to hold talks with the militants, something that now looked less likely, according to one senior security official.

“Wali-ur-Rehman was a serious and mature man, his death could hurt prospects for an expected peace initiative considered by the new government,” the official told Reuters.

However, many observers said any meaningful settlement with the Taliban was unlikely in any case given Sharif’s condition that the starting point for talks be respect for the country’s democratic order and institutions.

The White House did not confirm the killing, in line with its practice not to discuss drone strikes.

But its spokesman Jay Carney said Wali-ur-Rehman “has participated in cross-border attacks in Afghanistan against US and NATO personnel and horrific attacks against Pakistani civilians and soldiers”.

now it time for PTI to face the music

bolna bohut asan he kerna bohut mushkil

. .
matlab apko kushi ho rahi hai kaay PTI walaay mareingaay abb??? and more bomb blasts will happen??? and you will enjoy it?

im not saying that im enjoying it, but PTI towed that terror line(bad policy) and now PTI will reap what it sow, simple as that

PTI took a double edged sword and sooner or later it was gonna hurt PTI one way or the other

PTI failed to condemn bomb blasts which talibans did in karachi and now talibans will also target PTI as drone attack has happened and PTI will be held responsible

now it time for PTI to face the music

bolna bohut asan he kerna bohut mushkil

And how is it just PTI? Heck PTI wasn't even mentioned once in whole article you've posted, instead it was NS all around. What makes you think that only PTI is going to face the music, while PML-N will sit back and enjoy the show? What makes you believe that TTP is only going to take revenge in KPK?? Is there inside muk muka between NS and TTP??

PTI will do whatever and I m no PTI follower here but MQM will have to account for the terror it has carried out in the city of Karachi.

Talks with TTP cant be held. Its simple logic to me. The terrorist group which does not accept the state, which wants to force its ideology with gun and which wants its version of religion forced upon the rest of the country cant be talked out of their stance. They can only be shot out.

When TTP is pressed hard, it goes out and kills innocent civilians in our cities. How can you talk to such a group which has no morality?

The only way talks can be successful if we could identify which groups in TTP can be weaned away from violence and then isolate those who are hardliners. This will remove the confusion of talks or no talks. TTP as a group cant be talked out. Its individual groups which can be approached and asked to surrender. This is I think what PTI wants. Or at least this is what I understood of their point of view.

more deaths and more bloodshed on the way but USA and their paid touts and mercanries will pay the price and a real heavy one Imran the moment he gets fit should give call for Long March and surround the Parliament and ask government to order armed forces to shoot down drones and this will ready they way for peace in Pakistan

Fine F** them...

Fense the whole boarder, and start full flagged operation against them.. dig all civilians out... and then release all drones (US, Chinese, and Pakistani) on them... then see what the hell they can do against it ..

MUSHARRAF suggested that!

FENCE THE FREAKING BORDER! but the problem is the Afghan government doesn't allow fencing because they claim that "durand line" is disputed!!

so you clearly see who arms & funds these TTP scum bags????? clearly it is coming from Afghanistan!
