NEW DELHI: Tatra trucks, over which there was a controversy, are likely to make a comeback into the Indian armed forces as the government is now planning to procure the vehicles directly from the company manufacturing them instead of buying through agent firms.

One of the agent companies selling the Tatra trucks to the Indian Armyhad come under cloud after former Army chief gen V K Singh alleged that he was offered a Rs 14-crore bribe to clear a file related to the procurement of these vehicles, prompting the government to order a CBI probe into the issue.

The validity of a pact between Bangalore-based PSU BEML and UK-based Tatra Sipox got over on December 17. Now, the defence ministryis planning to procure the trucks from the original equipment manufacturer Tatra Truck Company in the Czech Republic, official sources told here.

As per the plans, the trucks would be procured by BEML from the Czech manufacturer, they said.

The sources said India had also held parleys with the company to buy it out for meeting the requirements of its armed forces but the manufacturer refused to sell it.

Due to a hold on procurement of Tatra trucks from the UK-based company, the maintenance of the fleet of over 6,500 such trucks in India was getting adversely affected due to lack of spares and other parts.

After the allegation was made last year, the government had decided to put on hold the procurement of the trucks pending the CBI inquiry.

Its not Tatra's fault if BEML purchase truck through middle agent & reject company's proposal to sell direct in cheap cost & more TOT.
Tatra is world leader in military truck segment & local companies can copy its look but not its quality.

This is pathetic.

Indian companies can make the same class of vehicle. Buy them, and phase out the Tatras.

Congress is a joke. I cant wait for them to be kicked out onto the street where they belong.

Tatra might be a great vehicle and a world leader. That does not mean we should buy them. We have the capability to manufacture similar trucks here. Why not encourage them?

Why not buy some & gain some key technology like axles which BEML lost due to corrupt officials then our truck companies would make world level trucks but these truck should manufactured by AL or TATA instead of BEML or VFJ.

I believe in gaining something if these are manufactured by private industry...Public companies are buying them for many years...What they learned...Moreover who is giving them the technology transfer

In first deal of tatra BEML got TOT of axles also but corrupt CEO of BEML & Ravi Rishi sign new deal in which TOT for key components are excluded & BEML only shows nuts & bolts , tyres etc. as localisation.

Don't be naive guys- whilst TATA and AL are upping their game on the defence front, they are still lacking at the top-end highly specialist end and this is exactly where TATRA can come in and fill the gaps. Yes, for sure, TATA and AL have filled or are ablt to fill many of the gaps the TATRAs had once filled but at the high-end you won't find much that will beat a TATRA. Perhaps in 5+ years these Indian players will have devloped their product ranges enough to be able to offer legitimate solutions- but not today.

All in all a very welcome decision that is certainly a boost to India's national security and this is how it always should have been- cut out the middle men, got straight to the OEM.
