TARRAR MPTV to be launched at IDEAS 2008

Seen it on tv. Does it come with a DVD player? :)

It has weak top armour... And if you attack it from the front then you do not hit the soldiers but they can not run away. They should add something to solve that. Why do they not add cover for the wheels?

Most MRAPs have roots in South African designes vehicles where the design is to let the bomb blast take out the axls and wheels but not the crew compartment. if you look at pictures of blown up Cougars in Iraq you will see this is the case.

Unless spring mines or overhead artillary burst are used there is little to no need for lots of heavy top armour. These vehicles are quite tall anyway negating such an attack.

. . .
This vehicle essentially will perform the duties that "Hummers" perform for US forces.

-Reconnaissance
-Offensive weapons platform
-Security/Fire support for infantry and heavy armour
-Mobile command center

I see what your saying, but wouldnt they be vulnerable to 120mm mortar fire?

If you are referring to TARRAR or RAAD then;

Recon - YES

Offensive Weapons Platform - IF UNDER ATTACK

Security/ Fire Support for Infantry/ Heavy Armor - DOUBTFUL

Mobile Command Center - NOPE! ITS TOO SMALL A PLATFORM

Thats why mobility is a key issue for these vehicles but it could be possible. The Insurgents only have to get lucky once.

Also armour is distributed to where the most likely threat is a good example being an MBT. If the front, top, belly, side and rear armour all weighed the same they would weigh more than 200+ tonnes. The prinicple is like a medieval soldier with a shield ie. the protection is forward focused. In the case of MRAPs features like bigger ground clearance and V shaped hulls play their part.

Having read about the MaxxPro MRAP in Combat and Survival magazine recently 9 designs were submitted by various companies the logic being that more units could be put on the ground more quickly despite the obvious logistics and maintenance nightmare.

Also alot of the recent add on armour to various US and British vehicles were developed by Israeli companies for example the MaxxPro MRAP uses an applique package from Plasan Sasa and the British Bulldog APC uses one developed by RAFAEL.
