Tamil Tigers humiliate India by killing Indians; Karunanidhi forced to act against pro-Tiger Vaiko
Mon, 2007-04-30 04:54
Chennai, 29 April, (Asian Tribune.com): In killing five Indian fishermen and taking into custody eleven (11) S. Indians the Tigers have humiliated India once gain. The Indian government will now have to negotiate with the LTTE which is a banned organization. The Tigers are also sending the message that, despite Indiaâs claim to be the greatest power in the region, they can get away with murdering Indian citizens by manipulating the Indian polity, both in the centre and the south.
Analysts point out that India has yet to take meaningful action against the LTTE despite assassinating their prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Analysts also argue that it is imperative for the LTTE to win Indian support and they will try all available tactics - fair or foul - as long as India allows them to get away with their brutal violence.
M. Karunanidhi, the Chief Minister of India, is in the centre of the latest crisis posed by the LTTE. His son, Stalin, organized a public rally to protest against the killing and abduction of the Indians, misled by the Tiger propaganda that it was an act committed by the Sri Lankan Navy. The father and the son whipped up Tamil Nadu feelings against the Sri Lankan government when they felt that they could get mileage out of supporting the LTTE and attacking the Sri Lankan government.
But now that the Director General of Police of Tamil Nadu , D. Mukherjee, has officially confirmed that the Indian fishermen were killed by the Tamil Tigers Karunanidhi has done a flip and is promising to consult Delhi on the banning of pro-LTTE Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko for offering open support to the LTTE.
Vaiko, who is the leading mouthpiece of the LTTE in Tamil Nadu, is reported to be financed heavily by the LTTE.
Indian media reported that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had told âthe State Assembly that the State government would consult the Centre and take a decision on banning political parties and organisations which supported the outlawed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).â
The Indian news agency, UNI said that C. Gnanasekaran (Congress) demanded the arrest of Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko for offering open support to the LTTE. He said the LTTE has emboldened to kill Indian fishermen because of the support offered to it by political parties in the state and demanded that the government impose a ban on them.
Replying to a query by Gnanasekaran the Chief Minister said the state government would inform the Centre about the involvement of LTTE in the killing of five fishermen from Kanniyakumari and abduction of 12 fishermen and seek its views and take actions.
The state government would also let the centre know, the views expressed by leaders of various political parties in the house, seek their opinion and take a decision on slapping a ban on political parties, which supported the LTTE, said UNI.
Analysts now believe that India which has been dithering on the issue of dealing with the LTTE, due mainly to pressures from Tamil Nadu, now has the upper hand to take some firm action. The LTTE, as usual, has overstepped its mark by overestimating its military capability and has made the wrong move in killing and abducting Indian fishermen. This is a crime that neither Karunanidhi nor Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, can ignore.
Analysts concede that the LTTE has given the Indians a legitimate reason to intervene decisively in the interests of India. If India fails to make use of this opportunity now India will have to pay more dearly in the future, they argue.
