TRICHY: Defying a Supreme Court ban, Anbil village near Lalgudi in Trichy district organized a jallikattu on Saturday morning with 65 bulls and 40 tamers. The nearest police station, about 10 km away, turned a blind eye as villagers gathered in the square called Mariamman Thidal, and cheered the participants as they tried to "tame" the bulls. The event is said to have started at 10am and went on until noon. The village has been organizing the bull sport for more than three decades, locals told TOI proudly. A video clip of the event was circulated among mediapersons.

The bulls were brought from several neighbouring villagers and kept ready a couple of days ahead of the event. About 600 villagers gathered at the venue where the event was organized by village heads despite the Supreme Court last week staying an Union government notification allowing bull-taming and bullock cart racing. A villager, who witnessed the Anbil event, told TOI on condition of anonymity, that "no one was injured". As the sport got under way, several spectators too joined in, trying to cling to the bulls' hump as it ran for a short distance, he said.

"The ultimate motive was to keep the traditional sport alive. For this, we had to go against the Supreme Court verdict. Since we had planned it within a short period of time, no prizes were distributed to the tamers or bull owners," said a jallikattu organizer, not willing to be named. Lalgudi, 30 km from Trichy, and a famous venue, has been organizing jallikattu for decades. While the sport was not held in 2015 in deference to the SC ban, villagers were determined to organize the event this time, he said.
"We were elated when the centre issued a notification allowing jallikattu. But, then came the news that SC stayed the notification, disappointing thousands of enthusiasts," said an organizer, who said another jallikattu would be held on Sunday. Trichy Superintendent of police S Rajeswari denied claims that jallikattu was organized in Anbil. She said there were less than 100 villagers at the spot.

"Only a temple bull was allowed to run for a short distance as a symbolic gesture without the tamers. About four bulls were brought to the venue by the spectators and the attempt to organize jallikattu was foiled with the police reaching the spot after getting the information," she said. A constable at the police station near Anbil, however contradicted her senior. She said personnel from the police station near Anbil were sent to Suriyur a famous jallikattu venue in Pudukkottai to prevent the sport from being held there. "We did not have sufficient personnel to be sent to Anbil," she said.

Who is Supreme Court to stop a 3000 year old Tradition? Supreme court and Rules were made only 100 years ago.:victory:

Though a Tamilian supporting Jallikattu, this shouldnt have been the case. SC and the northies activist must know or understand the prominence of Jallikattu in the culture of Tamil Nadu before trying to frame laws.

The onus lies on the central govt to modify laws. If Centre can modify Shah Bano verdict, Jallikattu is a piece of cake with no party supporting its ban except 5 star activists.

Probably next year we will see 100's of Jallikattu legally

It is not the northies or southies.

Most of the activists are backed by church-funded 'RIGHTS' groups who are pouring money into this.

Don't believe me?

This is not a case of North vs South, rather its a case of 5 STAR NGO's like PETA,and animal Activists Greenpeace etc. who want age old Hindu Traditions to be clamped down in the name of Animal Rights and Womens rights like the women being allowed to Ayyappa Swami Temple in Shabarimala. controversy. The same people will fall silent when asked about Christians and Muslims.

That's not very good . the rule of law must prevail before anything else.
Disobeying the orders of an institution as well respected as the Supreme Court will convey a very bad message to the Aam Aadami. The state govt must take necessary actions.

Not good? when church is pumping money into NGO's to specifically target Hindu traditions and festivals and make them look like its backward or horrific, while the same NGO's fall silent when it comes to Muslims or Christians or the right to eat Beef.
Do you think people are fools, SC or no SC,Nothing can stop Ram Temple or Jallikattu.I said it before and i say it again,SC is only a body.

The church may funds the money to NGO's or to animal rights activists but they can't bribe the supreme court judiciary bench. The verdicts of the supreme courts are guided by the rules and laws of the land and no exception can be given to anyone. If anything people should appeal the central govt. or the state govt. to bring more specific laws as to which customs/rituals can be followed/practiced in modern India.
The supreme court is not just a body it is one of the highest Constitutional authorities in the country that practices the law of the land in the Republic Of India.

Totally agreed .
SC and so called liberals are totally silent when it comes to Christians and Muslims.
Mosques in India wont allow women and suddenly they got Sabarimala for no reasons .
This is the traditions of Hinduism and they nothing to question that .

Courts should stay away from peoples beliefs .
They are nothing to pass comments about Jallikattu or Sabarimala.

If a public appeal has been filed with the supreme court the court cannot stay away from the hearings on the matters which have been brought under their concern. The verdict of the courts depends on the rules and laws which have been formed by our legislatures.
If anything people should asks the parliamentarians and the state govt to pass a law which allows the customs and the traditions that have been there for the past thousands of years.

The Court will decide only based on evidence and NGO's rake up issues because they are funded by Church
Crackerless Diwali,Colorless Holi, Sabarimala for women,JalliKattu and everything Hindu is portrayed as backward with a agenda .Hindus won't keep quiet while church tries to defame Hindu traditions.
