What's new

Talks on with Russia for second nuclear submarine on lease

we need 10 SSBN and 20 SSN pronto :woot:

The Chakra will use club missiles and not 1,000 KM missile the RuSN Akulas use

GOI is planning 4 SSBNs and if I am right it will not order more than 2 SSNs

No modern Navy declares the real number of Submarines in its arsenal. Same should be true for IN also.

And 4 SSBN is a done deal. No. of SSGNs/SSNs will be much more than 2. You can even expect a class of smaller hunter sub and another class of bigger SSGNs being inducted. :)

^^ that's why I said if I am right it will not order more than 2 SSNs

Actually according to modern standards, most SSNs have cruise missile strike capability, so the one doesn't reject the other anymore. Not to forget that modern AIP SSKs reject the need for dedicated hunter SSNs for medium ranges too. That's where the Yasen class would come in handy, since it is the successor of the Akula class as a long range hunter submarine and would be perfect for escort reasons too. The costal defence and medium range sub hunting would be done by P75 and P75I SSKs and our increased surface and air based ASW capabilities.

^^^^ I was referring to ToT coming with Rafale.

We will not know anything for sure till next decade.
@IND151 : Sorry.. overlook that part.. Cheers..

No I mean indigenous SSNs

and I don't think GOI will lease more than 2 Akulas

All navies operate more SSN than SSBN.So IMHO there is going to more than 2 indigenous SSNs.

Of course there are going to be more SSNs than SSBNs, but India unlike other countries will also have a large number of conventional subs, since they are cheaper and better for coastal defence reasons. So the total number of SSNs / SSGNs won't be comparable to USN, FN, or British navy. The point however will be when and how capable the indigenous SSNs will be, or if we should focus on improving the indigenous nuclear propulsions instead and licence produce or customize a foreign highly capable SSN faster?

1. In that case our navy will be more like chinese navy .Operating both SSN and SSK in numbers.

2. What about the rumour that we were getting baraccuda TOT along with rafale deal ?? Just rumour .......:D

Wouldn't make sense, since no naval manufacturers are involved in the Rafale deal, if at all it would be more likely for the P75I deal, to offer some ToT for nuclear propulsions, especially since Scorpene shares several systems with French nuclear subs as well. That has been even speculated for the first Scorpene deal, since the German offer was reportedly cheaper and the better, so providing ToT for nuclear subs might have turned the deal in favour to the French sides.

why we need to lease another nuclear sub from russia?? we have been developing Arihant nuclear sub.how much time will be needed for operational??

The Akula subs are hunter subs which are primarily used against other vessels. While the Arihant is a ballistic missile submarine.

Arihant is an SSBN . We are talking about leasing SSNs.

Exactly, we needed the first one to train crews, but another one makes only sense if it adds operational advantages and given to the possible production delays and cost rises, this choice definitely wouldn't be a good one anymore.

+ Does the scorpene we ordered come with AIP ??

Also What do you about bold part ?? Did it materialsed ??

As reported, the first 3 or even 4 won't have AIP, while it is an option for the latter and for the once in P75I. I hope we got something useful, otherwise we made a very bad choice in the first competition, but the French are known to provide the most ToT, although that has it's costs.
