People in the Congress, Political elites in USA, now know they have to give their people an "answer."

The war was a disaster for USA. USA may claim to have killed Osama Bin Laden, but the Taliban very much controlled Afghanistan.

USA lost the war when they coupled Taliban and Al Qaeda together, when they are totally two different movements.

Al Qaeda is a global movement while the Taliban is just local to Afghanistan.

I always read the news everyday to see whats going on Afghanistan.

the real tragedy here from the US perspective is that NATO had everything on a gold platter for them in 2001/02......Pakistan was on edge and was arm-twisted, but Pakistan offered full cooperation because there was mutual respect after initial qualms.

the taleban regime was overthrown like a sack of potatos and they went underground.....even Iran was cooperating with the NATO forces!!!!!


but somewhere along the lines, they alienated Afghans -- certain circles in Washington wanted to see Pakistan and Iran become isolated; and then of course Iraq war (an absolute DISASTER) sucked up most of the resources and the "War on terrorism" became a different type of 'war' which even now Americans are tired of.

Americans by and large want their troops home and want economic security. These geo political games and adventures eventually the cost becomes too high and the 'investment' becomes more of a liability.

You cant establish a direct link with these guys (the same ones we are talking to) and then claim that it is only Pakistan that is "undermining" any political process or "providing safe haven" to some of their officials (i have no information on that anyways)

why point fingers at Quetta and not at Qatar????

There is already plan to leave few thousand soldiers post-2014. And I think considering the way US has been able to somehow get relations better with their worst enemy with money and diplomacy, they can easily decrease the threat on their soldier.

The lingering residuals of the conflict will be contracted to third parties; the drones will likely remain or be shifted to Tajikistan/Kyrgzstan

Well whatever leads to long term peace and prosperity for the Afghan people has to be a step in the right direction, John Bolton once said: Negotiation is not a policy. It's a technique. It's something you use when it's to your advantage, and something that you don't use when it's not to your advantage.

I have had the pleasure of working with Afghan Police and civilians, and my heart goes out to their people. Because deep in my heart, i fear the same could one day befall our beloved motherland. These people have seen nothing but conflict, more than three generations born and raised in conflict.

May the afghan people see peace and prosperity, and may they see a day when people can get on with ordinary lives, men can swap the assault rifle for a sickle, pen or hammer, children can go to school unhindered and women can claim their place in society, the day when fathers don't have to bury their sons. - Amen
