Taliban-led offensive in Farah repelled

NATO and USA has the military might with Air support , on the other hand Taliban has only small automatic guns with some 12mm's , Allied forces can take on Taliban with their technological advance Forces but only a Fool would argue from a Enemy's prospect to battle them in open battlefield ... So Taliban use their strategy to hit n Run , Suicide Attacks and taking on the supportive ANA .. there is no way NATO or USA will ever find Victory in Afghanistan , In fact US/NATO realized this already that they are lost and now they are there to delay their humiliation in front of the World and Former USSR aka Russia .

Could be the case but it has been 17 years and NATO is not winning.

Neither will they win.Taliban are helpless ,they can't take any major urban areas - moment they try conventional battle they will be massacred from air.So they contend themselves with guerilla attacks.NATO to win needs to deploy 500,000 troops but has never reached such troop levels. This is the amount needed to garrison afghanistan including the countryside.ANA only has 150,000 and thus can't take many provincial rural areas. The only other option for an army is to commit systemic genocide of all population like genghis khan ,but that is impossible in modern day.So its a stalemate.

Hmm. Nice but not gona work.

Repelled?

The T's ain't looking for territory. They are looking to deplete the Govt military.
Sir,

Taliban attempted to capture provincial capital of Farah but they did not anticipate American intervention in this region (so close to Iran). Taliban has to do something grand in order to market itself as a strong opposition to US-led Afghan government but this may not materialize if US is willing to act. Taliban-led offensive in Farah was an unusual break from its typical hit-and-run operations but it turned out as a miscalculation.

If Taliban is neutered in Farah (mission in progress), the move will contribute to the cause of Afghan government and enable it to draw additional set of recruits.

Thats what winning looks like in Afghanistan.

Not really.US can keep this up indefinitely, they have a few troops and advisors there, not really costly.Their main punch comes from drones and airpower which is unchallenged. They can keep this level of presence forever if they want to.

You realise the Cost.

Soviets had more man.

These are mythical mystical Mountains where empires Go to die.

Afghans are inviting India next.

The number of Afghan forces is 313,728 which are under US command. The number of USA and NATO forces is in addition to this so that is a big force and yet Taliban are taking territory.

The cost is not really much for an economy as strong as the american.

Soviets deployed only 1 army(40th) in afghanistan -never more than 125,000 men or so.So no even though they did have more men they never used them in afghanistan .They only used t-55s and t-62s in afg, latest soviet tanks like t-72 and t-64 were never used in afg.

India will never send troops to afghanistan, only economic assistance and political support.

313,000 are not combat troops. They have 150,000 to 200,000 actual ground troops and a few thousand NATO troops to stiffen them.To garrison afg they need 500,000 which they won't have.Thats a no. bigger than whole us army.Neither can taliban do much except guerilla and terror attacks.Minute they try conventional warfare to take cities they will be defeated from air.

Farah city attack was busted with air support and taliban had hundreds killed.Taliban only managed to take kunduz for a while and were then driven out.All major cities like kabul, kandahar, herat, mazar sharif are under govt. control.
