Taliban in Islamabad

Why should they be arrested for over throwing the constitution when the general was rewarded with the presidency. ;)

Their method maybe unorthodox; but their message is right.
They say that "evil prevails when good men fail to act".

And this brothel was in the heartland of the Islamic republic; hard to believe that police & army didn't knew about it. Ignoring the elephant in the room wouldn't make it disappear. Someone had to take action.

But why student took the action? simple, because our government have failed us. If they would have properly enforces the laws; then it wouldn't have come to this.

If it were just the issue of the Brothel then it would not be as big an issue. HOWEVER they started issuing other demands as well. Therefore they are not just "moral" crusaders but sliding toward Talebanism (which ironically would have the women badly restricted in education and rights)

Well, I only agree with the brothel part. what are their other demands?

Dozens of young women from a religious school in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, have broken into an alleged brothel and kidnapped the owner.

The women, from the nearby Jamia Hafsa madrassa, burst in late on Tuesday, demanding the premises be shut down.

The women say they have a right to end immoral activity under Islamic law.

The BBC's Navdip Dhariwal in Islamabad says it is the first time such bold Taleban-style activity seen elsewhere in Pakistan has occurred in the city.

The Jamia Hafsa school has been at the centre of controversy in recent months.

In February, armed students prevented the authorities from demolishing an illegally constructed mosque and occupied a nearby children's library.

They have also demanded that local video owners close their stores.

'Not mistreated'

Correspondents say prostitution is widespread in Pakistan, even though it is illegal.

The women who led Tuesday night's raid near the city centre included teachers and students incensed, the school says, by reports the house was being used for immoral purposes.

They were later joined by male colleagues from the men's section of the madrassa.

When the alleged brothel's owner refused to shut the building, the raiding party forcibly shut it themselves and took the woman, her daughter and daughter-in-law back to the madrassa where they are still being held.

Initially the police were reluctant to step in to rescue the woman, but later registered a case and arrested two female teachers of the school.

But students then kidnapped two policemen from a nearby patrol. They too are being held in the madrassa and were allowed to speak to reporters.

"They have not mistreated us, they have served us tea and allowed us to keep our mobile phones," one of them, constable Hamad Raza said, the AFP news agency reports.

"We are told that negotiations are under way and we hope the matter will be over soon," he said.

School officials also say that two other teachers have been missing since early on Wednesday morning and that they believe they were kidnapped by intelligence agencies.

Their whereabouts is unclear.

School raided

The Jamia Hafsa has long been a problem for the capital city administration and Pakistan's Pesident General Musharraf.

It has often criticised his policies in the "war on terror" and called for Islamic law to be enforced in Pakistan.

The madrassa was among schools raided after the London bombings of July 2005 over alleged links with the bombers.

Madrassa officials deny any such links.

Our correspondent says it appears the administration is reluctant or helpless to take action against the school's teachers and students.

The incident comes amid concerns over the increasing "Talebanisation" of parts of Pakistan.

In Pakistan's tribal areas and in North West Frontier Province (NWFP), religious groups have sought to impose strict Islamic law on local people.

Across the tribal areas and in parts of NWFP, video and CD shops have been attacked and closed, barbers are banned from shaving beards and non-religious music and singing is prohibited.

yep; read the whole article, But I will still agree with their philosophy of closing down the brothels. But I cant say same for the other demands; Video stores are not illegal according to the Pakistani laws

And therein lies the heart of the problem. They are acting under political auspices rather than social.

They should have made the Police Act on it, Rather than taking it on their own hands, Which for a bystander like me shows alterior Motives.

Pak madrasa girls exchange cops for teachers

Blog this story

Islamabad: Bowing to the whims of militant girl students of a local madrasa here, who had in a Taliban-like operation held two policemen and three women hostage, Pakistan authorities have released two detained teachers of the seminary in exchange for the security personnel.

The veiled students, however, refused to release the women, whom they accuse of running a brothel. The girls, aided and abetted by the pro-Taliban Lal Masjid management and boys from a religious school, turned out to be a handful for the Pakistan government and the police as they caught the policemen and their vehicles and roughed them up in full view of TV cameras on Wednesrday.

Appearing helpless in the face of the open challenge mounted by the bamboo stick wielding girls numbering over a thousand, police officials held day-long talks with Ghazi Abdul Rashid, the radical deputy Imam of the mosque after which they managed to secure the release of the two police drivers and their vehicles.

Soon after "capturing" the policemen, the militant activists had removed wireless sets from their vehicles and began monitoring the police communications.

The policemen and the teachers of the madrasa were set free simultaneously late last night in full media glare after Rashid appeared in several TV channels threatening to step up the campaign to enforce Islamisation of the capital.

Obscenity behind the scenes

By Mohammad Saleem

FAISALABAD, March 28: Internet cafes in various parts of the city are allegedly screening porno movies, magnetising the youngsters to earn a fast buck, with the connivance of the police.

A survey conducted by Dawn revealed that the club owners in Ghulam Muhammadabad, eight bazaars of the Clock Tower, Gulberg, Islamnagar, Batala Colony, People’s Colony, Green View, Razaabad, Guru Nanakpura, Madina Town, Muhammadpura and many other parts of the city are luring young people into paying them heavily in the garb of all-in-one business.

Among the visitors are youngsters who even can’t type a single word on keyboard and they are allegedly spreading obscenity. Some of these cafes have become a meeting point for boys and girls who are served meals and drinks as well.

The net club owners charge Rs25 an hour to use the facility, but surprisingly most of the clubs even don’t have the connection facility. They have installed computer systems to screen porno movies for which they charge at will.

A cafe owner in Ghulam Muhammadabad has been heard saying to his customers: “No need to worry. Just enter the cabin if you want to enjoy a porno movie”.

Amir Wains, the former district police officer, had during his tenure taken strict notice of an internet club scandal and devised a strategy regarding the working of such clubs. He directed the SHOs to ensure that the doors to cabins of net clubs should be of glass. However, the police authorities have yet to materialize the plan.

An internet club operator told this correspondent that the local policemen visited his cafe every month to have their ‘share’ for allowing his business to go.

Some of the net cafes have also started providing porno videos to the people. They download movies from the net and supply them to various clubs.

A net café goer claimed that the policemen also enjoyed obscene movies in the clubs of Jhang Bazaar.

DIG (Operations) Muhammad Aslam Tareen told Dawn that the police would certainly take action against the black sheep in the market. He urged the masses to inform him if they found any unlawful activity in the net clubs.
