Boy seem to have hit a raw nerve here with the Chinese.

Yeah talk about respect sure, how about questioning those who were responsible for the killing of your ancestors? Anybody got the self-respect or guts to punish anybody responsible for that yet? Or maybe we should kill the poor starved section of our population right now and then gloat about our riches 50 years down the line, that ok with you for gaining respect.

Not many of your countrymen like to be reminded about it, just look at the responses.
Regarding reduction of poverty, it is happening but just cant be that fast, this is a democracy, things move slowly. An example,

Study Region % of initially poor % ofmovers % of fallers % reduction
Uttar Pradesh 66.7 12.8 5.5 -7.3
Andhra Pradesh 63.8 10.6 3.2 -7.4
West Bengal 63.3 18.8 7.7 -11.1
Assam 71.5 7.0 5.5 -1.5

Anytime soon you gonna discredit Mao for what he did? Oh you are not allowed to do that I forgot, chances are you get a tank run over you for protesting, not your fault obviously.

We're discussing him right here. I actually think Mao's one of the greatest leaders in history and Deng is a traitor that gambled with the life of the country, threw away our indigenous technology and made us far poorer, before we became richer. China's relative wealth declined in the 80's and early 90's, only after Deng died did our economy take off. In fact, during Mao's time, our economy grew by 9% a year except for 4 years (1959-1961, 1967). But that's internal politics and outsiders have no right to comment.

Arms are important but India should also pay attention to poverty reduction.

Why should we feel got hit a raw nerve when mistake had been corrected? perhaps its Indians seems to be more sensitive regarding "starve to death" since its still happening nowadays.

Btw, no need to "may be", you are already doing it on a regular basis, perhaps its some kind of Indian style "population control"?

Pop quiz for you, the post I replied mentions India 5 times directly, can you spot the five times?

Yeah, "slowly" on the expense of million children yearly? no urgency needed? perhaps they are expendable?
Let me show you how to deal with such matter the Chinese way:

However, it appears that much of the poverty reduction in the last couple of decades almost exclusively comes from China:

•China’s poverty rate fell from 85% to 15.9%, or by over 600 million people
•China accounts for nearly all the world’s reduction in poverty
•Excluding China, poverty fell only by around 10%

Again have some "shame" stop arguing with "facts" please.

Guess what I saw today. A BBC news special on end of life care in India. It showed old people abandoned by their children on the streets and brought to a home for the dying, to spend their last days alone. It also showed a home for widows who were driven out of their home by their families.

With values like that, you can talk about HR abuses all day long, and I'd still pity you.

China is very interested in helping India build any kind of infrastructure. Loans are also very likely. However your own government would be far to proud to allow help from China in such a manner.

India set to meet UN 2015 poverty goal

New Delhi: In the fight against poverty, India seems to be winning - in some parts of the country at least.

Vimla Sharma lives in Suwana Village in Rajasthan. Her life has been dramatically improved by a government scheme called the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.

Launched in 2005, it guarantees every rural family 100 days of work a year at a wage of 100 rupees a day.

She can now send her daughter to school - something which means a lot to her - but she thinks the scheme should be expanded further.

"There are 100 days of work in a year. Once these days are over, what will the women do? They work as labourers wherever they find work. We want the NREGA scheme to continue so that we are able to meet our household expenses," says Vimla Sharma.

In another part of Rajasthan - Kodukota village - it's a different story.

Farm worker - Bhairon Lal Meena - owns some farmland but it isn't enough to sustain his family.

He lives with his wife and elderly parents in a mud hut.

The government scheme did give him work but delayed payments meant the family still struggled to survive.

"What do we do with NREGA? We don't have anything to eat in the house. I had worked for four months as a farm worker with NREGA but have not got a single penny till now," says Bhairon Lal Meena.

In a progress review of the United Nations development goals for 2015, India is expected to reduce its poverty rate from 51 per cent to 24 per cent by the target date.

India's economy grew 8.8 percent in the June quarter, its biggest increase in over two years.

However, Caitlin Wiesen, country director of the UN's development Programme, says the growth must be managed well to make sure everyone benefits.

"Increasing inequality is a major concern and one has to look at the quality of growth. And the growth within India has been outstanding, it's one of the second fastest growing economies in the world. However, growth needs to be job rich and also needs to focus on agricultural productivity and production," says Caitlin Wiesen, Country Director, United Nations Development Program.

The growing number of wealthy Indians live in cities like New Delhi. Here, there are many who buy a pair of designer shoes costing 37 thousand rupees - more than a rural farmer earns in a year.

As India's government successfully tackles the massive problem of poverty - their next big challenge will be to close the widening gap between rich and poor.

Lets talk when it 2015 and India has held up its goal. Until then its pointless to argue with a future goal. Most here would not trust the GOI's projections.

Well they have already achieved their mid term goals in 2010--as program was started in 2005.

I always find it amusing the Chinese fixation on stats , when their entire country is known as the world's pariah on gathering or putting out real stats. This is a nation that lies about every information that it deems shows itself in a poor light.

for all we know china has the worse poverty, kill 100,000 in mines every year, tainted food killing another what 1 million a year, their dry wall poisons and lead poison in toys is killing another few millions every year . You know they lie about their calamities and when hundreds of thousands die, they claim only a few 100.

their best allies are ( wait , drum roll) also considered pariah nations.
