TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - Among strong domestic anti-Chiang sentiment, a prominent national university decided Friday to remove a statue of late President Chiang Kai-shek from its prominent location on campus, following lawmakers' call to remove effigies of Chiang in April, a beheaded Chiang statue in a national park that same month, and splashes of red paint inside Chiang's mausoleum in February.

A vote to decide the fate of Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen statues at the National Sun Yat-sen University is also the first of its kind in Taiwan, according to the school.

In a school referendum, 45.54 percent of students gave their votes, which took place between April 16 and 19. On Friday, the college announced that 62.93 percent voted to keep the statue of Sun Yat-sen, the founder of the Republic of China and of the Kuomintang, in the same spot, while only 46.72 percent opted to keep the Chiang Kai-shek statue. In effect, this means that the latter did not garner enough votes to pass the threshold of 50 percent to stay, so the school will move the statue to a less visible location.

Chiang Kai-shek, the leader of the Republic of China and of the Kuomintang from 1927 to 1975, has been labeled as a dictator among a majority of youngsters in Taiwan, and many claim he was responsible for a massacre of political dissidents in 1947 during an uprising against the KMT, later known as the 228 Incident.

The sentiment against Chiang has become stronger over years as more historical documents have been restored or recovered to reveal his role in the massacre, while he ruled Taiwan under Martial Law and imprisoned dissidents. The founding father of the Republic of China, Sun Yat-sen, a physician, is on the other hand, less controversial than Chiang, but still receives criticism for making an unwise deal with Japan during WWI.

In the article, he's listed as a dictator.

To me, he's a hero of the Chinese people

How is he a hero? He cede concession of land to western, Japanese and Russia. Fully declared war on Japan only by the 1935 incident and fully committed to defend China major only when he saw opportunity of massive aid from USA. His KMT failed in mainland China becos of high corruption due to his policies.

how did KMT cede lands to foreigners?

KMT fought the bulk of the war when CCP was still being cornered in the mountains of Yan'an

No KMT = no modern China

Now CPC official policy is to admit KMT and Chiang Kai Shek positive contribution.

The problem with Chiang is he has a reputation as a coward. The west did not respect him and secretly nicknamed Chiang "peanuts" .
And depending on the sources, he only fought the Japanese when shit hit the fan but he was more dedicated fighting Communist. The Nanjing massacre was the result of KMT's lack of aggression to the Japanese.

The Shanghai campaign decimate every single KMT crack unit. Chiang did not conserve any effort.

The Nanjing campaign is a failure for the retreating unit to reorg. The commanding officer was Tang Shengzhi, a warlord, who is not Whampoa clique.

After Shanghai campaign, KMT are not able to initiate offensive because China was not industrialize. Meanwhile Japan overstretched.

The result was stalemate.

Things start changing after massive USA support poured in. But the airlift logistic and Myanmar road logistic came too late.

Nevertheless, the elite KMT troop armed and train and supply by USA in India, the new 1st and new 6th, are better than Japanese elite unit in Myanmar theatre.

i look at his contributions overall. He has his pros and cons.

on a nett scale, his KMT ultimately won the war for the Chinese

Also, the failure of the KMT to resist the Japanese early on was due to the already weak structure of CHina as a whole, who has just shedded 4000 years of imperial rule not too long ago. Industrialization was hardly present in the country.

If Mao conduct the Korean war without Russian support, PLA will win 1st 2nd 3rd campaign at the most -- due to element of surprise.

The 4th and 5th campaign will be complete defeat.

By the time of 4th and 5th campaign, it turns into war of attrition.

KMT started the fight against the Japanese after the Xi'an incident.

Zhang Xueliang admit he is the coward who forgo Manchuria. And he push the blame on Chiang.

Qing cede lands to Japanese and British was becos of lost of war not becos they had option. Chiang cede the Dalian port to Soviet when he can simply refused it but becos of exhange of aid, he agrees it. Chiang also refused to fight Japanese in 1931 when they entered Manchuria.

Modern China is not started by Chiang but by KMT of Sun Yat Sen and credit also need to give Communist party for the revolution. Chiang basically running a dictator style of government and indulge himself in luxury and had close connection with the rich and elite. He lost touch with the mass of Chinese especially the peasants which were the bulk of China.

Chiang cannot command a single Manchurian army in 1931, just like he cannot command all the other warlords.

The traitor is Zhang Xueliang.

Get your facts right.
