Mainland-Taiwan trade strong despite political waves

The revelation late last week that Taiwan was the Chinese mainland’s seventh-largest trade partner in 2017, with trade volumes up by over 12 percent, may have surprised many, considering political tension between the two sides lately.
Economic exchanges across the Taiwan Strait have come a long way over the years, reaching more than 100 billion US dollars in three decades, and the trend is a continued ascent, despite small bumps along the journey.
It took decades for the mainland and Taiwan to reconnect after a long political standstill. Business activity began to pick up in the late 1980s, after both sides loosened their rules on cross-Strait exchanges.

"It all started 30 years ago,” said CGTN current affairs commentator Gregory Zang. “[Taiwan leader] Jiang Jingguo, also known as Chiang Ching-kuo, liberated political party participation and also the newspaper publication before he passed away.”
The first Taiwanese enterprise operating in the Chinese mainland was the snacks and beverage maker Want Want Group. The company registered its trademark in the mainland in 1989. Vincent Lin, chief representative of the company's Beijing office, said the mainland's market prompted the company to make the investment.
“In 1991, Want Want set up its first factory in the mainland in Hunan Province. Now we have 34 production hubs and over 130 factories,” said Lin.

Some said that since a growing number of Taiwanese manufacturers have relocated their factories to the mainland, Taiwan locals have lost jobs to their mainland peers. But Lin said the trend instead has brought tangible rewards to the island.
“While Taiwanese enterprises have set up supply chains and manufacturing assemblies here thanks to lower costs, they have bought many raw materials, key components from Taiwan, and employed Taiwanese people,” Lin added. Between 2006 and 2016, Taiwan’s trade surplus with the mainland reached a total of 725 billion US dollars.”
Both sides freed up their trade and investment ties by signing an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement in 2010, and further secured their ties three years later by signing a service trade agreement. However, additional talks and legislation stagnated as the political environment worsened in recent years.
In particular, current Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen has side-stepped acknowledging the 1992 Consensus, under which the two sides agreed to acknowledge the one-China principle and that both the Chinese mainland and Taiwan are part of a single country.
“Whenever there is political disagreement or tension, this would impact economic ties and trade. I would like to see Tsai Ing-wen come back to her senses, knowing that the 1992 Consensus is the basic principle to follow to guarantee better communications,” said Zang.

More students from Taiwan keen to study and work on Chinese mainland

A growing trend in students from Taiwan has been to study on the Chinese mainland. As officials from both sides continue to expand cross-strait economic and social cooperation, students from Taiwan are keen to try their luck in big cities like Beijing.
The number of students from Taiwan studying on the Chinese mainland leaped from 7,346 in 2011 to 10,870 in 2015, according to statistics from Chinese Ministry of Education.
"Many students are keen to study on the mainland. They want to live here and really make it their home as well. This is very positive for youth exchanges across the Taiwan Strait," said Luo Dingjun, a student studying in Tsinghua University.

In 2010, China's Education Ministry began to allow students to use their test scores in Taiwan to apply for universities on the mainland. And in 2013, students from Taiwan were included in the basic medical insurance system for mainland urban residents.
Fast forward to Oct. 1 last year and Chinese universities lowered entrance requirements for students from Taiwan - more than 200 such universities approved students with lower scores than previous years in Taiwan's college entrance exam.
"I hope the government can provide more internships and job opportunities specifically for graduates from Taiwan. For us, who have been studying here, nearly 80 percent are preparing to stay on the mainland for our career development," said Ze Hao, a student from Peking University.
Despite the promising economic prospects they are eyeing on the mainland, some students from Taiwan are hoping the service industry on the mainland can catch up.

"I think the service industry in Taiwan is better, but I see the mainland is slowly catching up, and I believe someday it will overtake Taiwan," said Huang Jinhong, a Peking University student.
During the Communist Party of China's 19th National Congress held in October 2017, Chinese officials said that the people of Taiwan will be treated the same as those from the mainland in terms of pursuing their studies, seeking jobs or living on the mainland.

Cross-Strait ferries take people home for Spring Festival

In the wake of Taiwan aviation authorities' refusal to approve 176 extra cross-Strait flights over the Chinese New Year travel period and the resulting seasonal air fare hike, some have turned to the sea, as mainland’s shipping companies have also taken upon themselves to make that water route a welcome alternative ride to Taiwan.
Cosco Star is one such ferry service. It offers direct waterway rides from Xiamen to Taichung and Keelung on different dates.

Chang Chih-Lung, a businessman originally coming from Taichung, said the ship has been ideal for him, not just because the tickets are easy to get.
Chang told CGTN that, “This is very convenient for me. I’ve stuck with the water travel for the last few years. You get in a comfortable ship in the evening and wake up at home. And it hasn’t a limit for the weight of luggage. We’re bringing dates, dried seafood and other local specialties home. The changes to air routes wouldn't affect me.”
The non-existent weight limit is a huge plus for people coming home to Taiwan, as well as for mainland tourists celebrating the holiday to the island.

Zhang Gao from Jiangsu Province had come to Xiamen on a high-speed train and considered the journey smooth. Bringing his wife and daughter to Taiwan for a second visit, Zhang said: “Beef jerky, pineapple cakes… Taiwan has great food and offers great fun. My daughter liked it so much that she asked us to go there again this year.”
The Cosco Star has been in service since 2009. At first, it almost exclusively carried mainland tourists. Now, almost 40 percent of the passengers are people going home to Taiwan, so the ship has been considerate of the clients.

“We want to make sure that people in Taiwan get home from the mainland before the eve of the Chinese New Year. So this year, we changed our departing schedules over the period to meet that goal,” according to Shi Mingli, manager of the Xiamen Mintai Ferry that operates the Cosco Star.
“We’re also keeping the fare rate stable in the rush season. We are not going for profit over the holiday period.”

So far, 95 people have boarded the ferry. In less than 12 hours, they will arrive in Taichung for the Chinese New Year. But Cosco Star is not the only service in the coastal area provided to make sure everyone gets home on time.
There are cross-Strait ferry services in other places in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces as well. Altogether, they could reach tens of thousands of passengers for the spring festival travel rush.
As a comparatively new and lesser-known travel option, the sail is smooth for now.

Mainland's preferential policies attract more Taiwan youngsters

About 61.6 percent of the respondents aged 18 to 29 in Taiwan said their willingness to study, work or invest in the mainland has increased due to preferential policies toward Taiwan compatriots, according to a survey on the island.
The survey carried out by "Global Views," a monthly magazine focused on politics, economics and social affairs in Taiwan, said the desire to study, work or invest in the mainland was highest among Taiwan people aged 18 to 29, compared to other age groups.
A similar survey done by the same magazine 10 years ago showed youth in Taiwan were most likely to have negative attitudes toward the mainland, but today's young people are the least likely to have these views compared to other age groups, said the magazine in a report.
The attitude toward the mainland among young people in Taiwan has changed dramatically.
The report pointed out the reason was that Taiwan's youth have become much more practical when facing choices about their future development.
Only 3.3 percent of all the interviewees said the island's authorities should strongly oppose preferential policies, but almost none of the young respondents chose this option, according to the report.

Taiwan means nigh market. In that respect, south of China is a little different from northeast of China. SK and especially Japan have great similarities with northeast of China in terms of street market culture (or lack of it, LOL). South of China, including Taiwan, however, has a much livelier market-night market culture. Perhaps weather plays a role.

Ive heard that Taiwan have an abundance of vegetarian restaurants and take it seriously too.

Yes, lots of them. There is even vegetarian meat; tastes like meat but it is not meat actually.
I love night-market culture, too.
I like the harmony, sense of absolute safety and tranquility. This is the way Greater China social life is, but, I think in China's southern parts, night market culture is much deeply rooted. Again, I think this has to do with weather.

We call it Mua Chee in Singapore (I think the pronunciation is similar in Taiwan?). And wth I just realized Mochi and Mua Chee actually are the same thing...

麻薯 - Ma Shu。Quite similar in Singapore pronunciation. Same in Mainland. And there are so many kinds.
The last one actually looks like 花生饼 that I had eaten in Qingdao. I am not sure Singapore has similar 饼。
The one I had eaten in Qingdao did not look similar to this. It did not have such coarse skin, but more smooth.

The 2018 annual conference of the summit for entrepreneurs across the Taiwan Strait concluded Wednesday in Xiamen, east China's Fujian province, with deals worth 10.3 billion yuan (about 1.5 billion U.S. dollars) signed.
When addressing the conference Tuesday, Wang Yang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said that the Chinese mainland would only open wider and wider to Taiwan, with ever-improving policies and services.
Themed around new measures for industrial integration and sharing new business opportunities, this year's conference gathered more than 1,000 cross-Strait entrepreneurs, heads of industrial and business groups and experts to pool ideas for exchange and cooperation.
Guo Jinlong, president of the mainland-based council of the summit, said that cross-Strait entrepreneurs should help boost cross-Strait economic cooperation and industrial integration with practical actions.
Vincent Siew, president of the Taiwan-based council of the summit, said that cross-Strait business cooperation would enter a new phase amid changes of global and cross-Strait economy, adding that entrepreneurs should contribute more to integrated cross-Strait economic development.
Entrepreneurs attending the conference suggested that cross-Strait business circles should join hands to tackle new economic challenges, grasp new opportunities brought by cross-Strait economic integration development, and share new business opportunities.
They also called on cross-Strait compatriots to work together to uphold the 1992 Consensus embodying the one-China principle and resolutely oppose and curb "Taiwan independence," and to create a sound environment for cross-Strait economic cooperation as well as contribute to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and the realization of the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.

They also called on cross-Strait compatriots to work together to uphold the 1992 Consensus embodying the one-China principle and resolutely oppose and curb "Taiwan independence," and to create a sound environment for cross-Strait economic cooperation as well as contribute to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and the realization of the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
