Like in any negotiation, both side need to compromise in order to have an agreement.

China has attempt to compromise the most they could possibly give arguably for any sovereign state.

Hoping somehow that Taiwan could severance completely its political and social relationship with respect to mainland China just wouldn't fly given the gravity of history.

And Taiwanese should by now, come to realize that their uncompromising stand could only lead to worsen outcome for them in the future.

There is an external force that is the cause.

Only when that external force is pushed out far away can Taiwan be peacefully reunited.

Proper time for this was to make this trick work with Hong Kong. Then Taiwan would have been just a continuation of existing practice. Replace one country two systems with one country three systems. Now, if you propose this idea to Taiwan, they will say, let PRC become a democracy then we will unify.

The day PLA unify by force, it will be one country one system.

Key point that most people do not see.
First: China does not need to impose their system of government. Taiwan can keep their "forever election" & "forever campaigning" democracy system.

Second: China does not need to invade Taiwan.
