Rolls-Royce, Honeywell Said to Bid for Turkey Helicopter Engines

Rolls-Royce Holdings and Honeywell International are in joint talks with Turkey’s state aerospace company to provide military and civilian helicopter engines,
two people with knowledge of the situation said.
Turkey’s state-owned TAI, or Turkish Aerospace Industries,
plans to buy at least 10 engines for helicopters to be manufactured at the company’s plant in Ankara, the people said, asking not to be named because the talks are confidential.
The company may start talks with Turbomeca SA of France should talks with U.K.-based Rolls-Royce and U.S.-based Honeywell fail, one of the people said.
Turkey initiated programs in the mid-2000s to build its own planes, helicopters, tanks and navy vessels as part of an effort to cut military spending and boost its manufacturing industry. The nation has the second-largest military in NATO, after the U.S.
TAI, which is planning to raise about $300 million in an initial public offering, is working on developing its own engine for the helicopters, one of the people said. Until then, the engines will be purchased from other suppliers, the person said.
A TAI corporate communication officer didn’t respond to calls seeking comment on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Honeywell spokesman Chris Martin and Rolls-Royce spokesman George McLaren said LHTEC, a 50-50 partnership between Honeywell and Rolls-Royce, currently provides CTS800 engines for the T129 Atak helicopter in Turkey. That engine can also be used for future needs in the country, they said, without confirming a new bid.

Partnerships are key to our aspirations, as we work with our partners to help Turkey achieve its ambition of becoming self-sufficient in the defense industry as the industry works to design, develop and manufacture completely new platforms for their national defense requirements and for export.

flight-deck capabilities as well as meeting with our key customers and partners in this important region.
Our activities in Turkey span a wide range of applications including providing power for the
T-129 helicopter with the
