Mr. Assad and the remnant 'hangovers' of the Baathist/socialist regime are finished.

They should have some honour and step down. Syria is a 'democratic' country with a well educated, moderate and forward-looking population; its only the West which villifies them and labels them "axis of evil" which is absolute GARBAGE.

In any case, Syria simply does not need this unrest right now. If the people want him out, he should step down.

Don't these idiots learn from history? You can't kill people, you'll just piss off 100000 more people doing it.

but at the same time --- and with regards to Hama in particular -- some of those protestors are definitely Jihadi types. Countries like Egypt and Syria ---which are ancient countries with much civilization and history --- they must be extremely careful and cautious.

and this applies to Libya as well......this widespread Arab Revolution is a very interesting time in history

the only thing the protestors in Egypt or Syria ----whether they are ultra-religious people, the centrists, and the secularists ---have in common ---- they want the leaders to step down....

after that, there is much polarization....this is the reality

I think things will get worse before they get 'better'

just being realistic.

I am sure Muslim countries can solve this problem peacefully among themselves.

What I don't understand is, how can democracy work in the middle east? Everyone is so bent on destroying each other. The tribal attitude does not help either. And no one is ruling out the chance of an islamist/far right party coming in power.
America has been secretly funding the oppositions in Syria, so it can continue with its middle eastern agendas. All America did was throw them at the line of fire. Democratic elections in Syria will not be completely free as Israel and US will try to manipulate the elections so they can reach their strategic interests.

It is said somewhere in the history that the Land of Syria would be the bloodiest for the Muslims thats is why those who were martrayed at this land would directly be lifted to heavens. This inspirational sort of belief has been the prime driver behind calm and persistent attitude of Syrian muslims despite centuries of operssion.

Looking at the history, Syria has been center to massive bloodsheds of Muslims, starting with the matrydom of Hazrat Hussien.

Hama has been traditionally anti-bashar..this is not the first time they have revolted..his father Hafiz al Assad did the same as well

The whole fertile crescent (iraq lubnan aur sham) has oftentimes seen 2 sides....forward looking, progressive population

And also a bloody history....history is one thing that can never be overlooked

As for Imam Hussein A.S. He is buried in Karbala Iraq. He was martyred there as well.

An important city for ALL Muslims in the world.

Assalam alaikum,

Yes Hussien ( r-a) was martyred in karbala'a.

There r many hadeeth of the prophet obout sham and its ppl this is a blessed land, but unfortunately this family of a smaller sect ( who hates muslims ) have come to power and killing muslims.

Those ppl who spread that the opposition is funded by the u.s etc may be it is true or not but overall this regime is brutal and it is supressing its own ppl since more then 40 years. it is time for it to go.

This regime has not fired a single shot in aljolan heights since it was occupied by israelies in 1967, didnot do anything when israeli planes were flying above the presidential palace and kept itself calm when the israelies bombed a an atomic reactor site but have sent its tanks and troops to kill its ppl.

InshaAllah bashar is going down and i wonder why ppl who think they have the right to live under democracy or where they can practice their freedom of expression or want to have just system oppose the syrian public and call them american funded etc.

Hi, Waleykum Salam...

which sect?

.
Assalam alaikum

Bashar is a nusairi ( or mostly ppl know them as alawi ) and nusairies r according to shias kuffar most of the high offices r with them. French recruited them heavily in army ( most of the army is from them specially higher ranks )

Out of 25 million or some less population they r close to 2 million or may be a little bit more.
The way they kill ppl and how they torture them to death tells about their brutality, they didnot spare the kids even and he is trying to play with the secterian card actually there r many alawies against him and participating in demonstrations while the isamailies have put their weight in public favor.

The Intervention thing kind of went wrong with Gaddafi , I don't think another one is possible Syria has a much stronger Military then Libya.

No Arab league support. While Gaddafi may have been an outcast, Assad is definitely one of their own. Hitting at him would weaken their own position.

Also is it just me that find it weird how the son of the Butcher of Hama is giving interviews on BBC CNN etc as a pro-democracy activist?

Here is Ribal Assad the activist son denying his father's killing of innocent people in 1982.

In 1982, it was Rifaat al-Assad, the brother of the previous president, who was accused of orchestrating the slaughter of the innocents.
But while Mahar al-Assad can expect to be hunted down and tried for crimes against humanity if the current regime is toppled, his uncle, dubbed “The Butcher of Hama”, is living in luxury in a £10 million townhouse in Mayfair, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Rifaat al-Assad, 73, the former vice president of Syria, moved more than a year ago to a Georgian mansion off Park Lane, next door to his son Ribal, 36, who lives in a similar property.

Ribal, who runs a protest group opposing the current regime in Syria and met the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, last week, appears regularly on British television as a critic of the current crackdown.

He openly admitted his father was living in London when he was contacted by The Daily Telegraph last week, but claimed he had been framed over the Hama massacre.

“He was the head of the president’s guard at the time, which had to protect Damascus,” he said. “Why would he be in Hama?”
Rifaat al-Assad has never been indicted by an international court, but there are independent accounts of his alleged involvement.
