I don't think either Russia or Iran care about Assad as an individual. They care about the stability of the country, because the other option is harmful, in the short & long term, for both countries (it is also harmful for other countries in the region, but they don't seem to realize it yet). Both countries have backed talks to find a solution to the political problems since day 1. Unfortunately, opposition has always been "Assad has to go and then we will start talking" which has been problematic.
