Swiss minaret vote: Projections suggest ban backed

BBC News - Swiss minaret vote: Projections suggest ban backed

Projections from exit polls suggest that voters in Switzerland have backed a referendum proposal to ban the building of minarets.

The result is not yet official, but the BBC's correspondent in Berne says if it is confirmed, it would be a surprise.

The proposal was backed by the Swiss People's Party (SVP), the largest party in parliament, which claims minarets are a sign of Islamisation.

Opponents say a ban would discriminate and that the ballot has stirred hatred.

The government opposes a ban.

Switzerland is home to some 400,000 Muslims and has just four minarets. Official referendum results are due at 1700 GMT.

Under the Swiss system, a referendum result is not binding unless a majority of canton voting districts approve it, as well as a majority of voters.

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes, in Bern, says the voting trends are very bad news for the Swiss government which had urged voters to reject a ban on minarets, fearing unrest among the Muslim community and damage to Switzerland's relations with Islamic countries.

This will cause major problems because during this campaign in the last two weeks different mosques were attacked, which we never experienced in 40 years in Switzerland

But voters worried about rising immigration, and with it the rise of Islam, seem to have ignored the government's advice, our correspondent says.

Partial results from the poll which closed at 1100 GMT indicated that the German-speaking canton of Lucerne accepted the ban, while French-speaking cantons Geneva and Vaud voted against, news agency AFP reported.

"The initiative would appear to be accepted, there is a positive trend. It's a huge surprise," French-language television said, 30 minutes after polls closed at midday.

Islam is the most widespread religion after Christianity in Switzerland, but it remains relatively hidden.

There are unofficial Muslim prayer rooms, and planning applications for new minarets are almost always refused.

Supporters of a ban claim that allowing minarets would represent the growth of an ideology and a legal system - Sharia law - which are incompatible with Swiss democracy.

But others say the referendum campaign has incited hatred. On Thursday the Geneva mosque was vandalised for the third time during the campaign, according to local media.

Before the vote, Amnesty International warned that the ban would violate Switzerland's obligations to freedom of religious expression.

'Political symbol'

The president of Zurich's Association of Muslim Organisations, Tamir Hadjipolu, told the BBC that if the ban was implemented, Switzerland's Muslim community would live in fear.

"This will cause major problems because during this campaign in the last two weeks different mosques were attacked, which we never experienced in 40 years in Switzerland.

"So with the campaign... the Islamaphobia has increased very intensively."

Sunday's referendum was held after the People's party collected 100,000 signatures from eligible voters within 18 months calling for a vote.

SVP member of parliament Ulrich Schluer said the referendum campaign had helped integration by encouraging debate. He rejected the charge of discrimination.

"Every Muslim is allowed to come together with other Muslims to have the religion together," he told the BBC.

"But a minaret is a political symbol. It is a symbol for introducing, step-by-step, Sharia rights also in Switzerland, parallel to the Swiss law which is a result of Swiss democracy. And this is the problem. It is nothing against Muslims."

In recent years many countries in Europe have been debating their relationship with Islam, and how best to integrate their Muslim populations.

France focused on the headscarf, while in Germany there was controversy over plans to build one of Europe's largest mosques in Cologne.

:) Third eye you failed to highlight some parts let me highlight it for everyone to know how this unjustified ban is creating hatered.

if a church is in autralia(???) it is a property of Australia

No, a church or any place of worship in Australia is NOT the property of Australia. It is the property of that particular faith.

Supporters of a ban claim that allowing minarets would represent the growth of an ideology and a legal system - Sharia law - which are incompatible with Swiss democracy.

You bothered to highlight one section in bold and red but did not bother with the other section re law issues.

Both are tied together in a perception that reflect the underlying matter.

Since you bothered to make this highlight why not apply a suitable comment to your reasoning of its significance.

If people bothered to scratch the surface on most topics here you might actually have a realistic debate vs the never ending love hate relationships that go nowhere fast.

Islam is relegion of God. No matter how much you suppress it, it is ought to spread and illuminate more and more hearts. If it is allowed to build Mosque, that shell be great and the move will be a welcome one for Islam and Muslims will be able to preach freely but if Muslims are suppressed by law, by ban or by force, the movement will gain more momentum staying under the covers and will erupt with greater force then it is at present. Switzerland was never an Islamic country with 400,000 Muslim Population. When this number reached 400,000 out of no-where, more people will embrace Islam in-spite of bans and restrictions.

When there was one torch, there was one "source" of light and it could only illuminate another torch or few others max, but now there are 400,000 torches, millions of torches will lit in few years time through them. If it is banned, it will be better for the growth of Islam in Switzerland because every Muslim will feel responsibility to contribute and spread this light more.

They logic for banning the minarets is childish and silly.

The Swiss People's Party is known for its provocative campaigns for minting votes. They had only two seats in the parliament. Its just like the Bal Thackray resorts to silly things for gaining some publicity.

Banning minarets wont stop growth of Islam but it will surely damage the neutral image of Switzerland

.
Reason for a majority backing of the ban is because of the ways of Muslims in Europe and elsewhere, whenever in for example Britain they get in considerable numbers they start demanding Sharia law etc and start preaching their view or what they believe in like nuts, they just create division in society by their senseless demands and ways.So its obvious that locals are now feeling threatened and irritated by these Islamists.

About the ban,it will be the decision of the Swiss people so everyone should accept it,its ban on minarets only not the practice of any religion.

Few examples :-

I want to see flag of Allah flying over Downing St | News
All homosexuals should be stoned to death, says Muslim preacher of hate | Mail Online
Sunday Express | UK News :: ‘Make every woman wear a burkha’
Devout Muslim sues Tesco for making him carry alcohol | Mail Online

lame excuse keeping in view the laws of the land no one can impose Sharia law on the non-Muslims.

Besides its all about personal laws and almost every country gives the right to have personal laws.

This is simply Islamo-phobic step and it will only widen the gulf between Muslims and these crusaders.

Besides this ban is violation of human rights also it is in contrast with law for human rights in Swiss Federal Constitution

when the day we can see the christian churches are built in main islamic countries, then by the time we will see the mosque being built in christian countries, it is a matter of mutual reciprocate and tolerance, reflect on islam's misdeeds first before pointing at others.....first you welcome the people then the other people will welcome you, not calling for jihad to against every unfairness done to you to destroy lifes and whole operational healthy structure, think of innocent others as victims during your jihad too in the past as well, both sides become victims and nothing positive made...........christians vs islams sad....

Thhis thread just shows how people have misperceptions on what actually happen in muslim countries. A large number of muslim countries have churches and synagouges. Some of these countries have jewish and chritians locals from thousands of years such as in Syria, Egypt, Turkey, Algeria and even in Iran. There was a considreable Christian community in Iraq, but thanks to the lawlessness after the Bush's war there has been a decline in Christian population there although the Churches still remain.

Even in UAE and Bahrain you have churches and even a few temples and a gurudwara because of the significant hindu and sikh population. The Bahrain ambassador to the US is actually a female Jewish Bahraini. And in special housing compounds were many expats live in relative luxury there are even churches in saudi arabia and before the 1970s there was considerable religious freedom. Now the situation is slowly but surely turning back to Islamic principles were religious freedom is allowed. This blog provides a lot of information about Saudi Arabia without being apologetic Crossroads Arabia

If people actually gave up their prejudice and actually researched or even visited a muslim country they would know that the reality is far from what is portrayed.

The Swiss far right party is claiming that "Islamic systems" like forced marriages, honor killings, e.t.c. when these are all AGAINST Islamic laws and Quran anyways. Why not pass laws outlawing these because any muslim would support it.

And another thing, it is not an Islamic requirement by any means that a minaret is a required for a mosque or that it is a political "symbol" or that it "portends" a call to sharia law. Even a simple hall can be used to pray, or muslims can pray in open spaces. Prayer to God is prayer, there is nothing political about it.

Atleast half of the swiss are intelligent enough to not be scared by this propaganda.

We always fail to understand one thing...

Ban on Islamic dress (head/face cover) in France..
Ban on Minars in Switzland...
Ban on other things around the world..

They are not doing this for us...

They are doing this for the future generations...

Our grandparents were married in a different way than our parents...
As in our grandparents maybe did not see their wives or husbands while our parents maybe did...now today's generation is different...bf's and gf's...
The western secular states are banning the things for future generations to make future generation of ours into secular ones..Yes we do have an impact but if they wanted us to change they would have planned that 40 years before....The world they want to make is all secular…
They are planning the stuff for future not for now….
