Swachh Bharat: Modi's promise of cleaning Varanasi doesn't appear to be an empty one

.
do you really want to debate this point??

With you ? No.

But still how come the Government or temple authorities allowed to do things on heritage site ?

Tens of Thousands of people visit the Varanasi Ghats everyday. Govt. has no say in this.

River banks are public place, what can the temple do ? Why would they want to do anything ?

protection of ecology supercedes cultural beliefs.

The destruction of ecology is not due to cultural beliefs, it is due to slow death of cultural beliefs.

.
By that Logic why consider a heap of stones as "heritage" ?

You want to convert the ancient Vanaras Ghats into a modern version of a Toilet ? :woot: ............ you want to plaster them with TILES ? God !!! Talk about a macabre sense of taste and class.

Your other Idea is to replace STONE with STONE ............ how is that any more sensible ?

Approach paths to the ghats can be paved with Stone, only we have no money for that. IF we have money better to use them to build a modern sewage system and a sewage treatment plant. But that is just me :disagree:

This is a 250 year old picture of Varanasi, see the steps ? That is what makes them heritage.

Benares_A_Brahmin_placing_a_garland_on_the_holiest_spot_in_the_sacred_city_by_James_Prinsep_1832.jpg

are those steps as clean and neat as they are in the pic... most of them are worn out... clean them as much as u can u can't make them look clean, u can call them of being not dirty..

How come the Government or the temple authorities allowed them ?

why would they stop people cleaning the ghats ?? when they didn't stop people from urinating, littering and dirtying the ghats ??

Who is responsible for these 87 Ghats ? Isnt it Government ?

Sulabh International, active in the field of sanitation, promised to bring the ghat to its ancient form.

The NGO’s founder-director Bindeshwar Pathak met Modi during his visit to the banks of the Ganga in Varanasi on Thursday.

Modi expressed satisfaction over the cleaning of Assi Ghat, whose at least 25 steps has been covered with silt and mud for several decades. The NGO Sulabh has adopted five other ghats in Varanasi for daily cleaning and maintenance.

Stone will always look like Stone. Maybe they can be Relaid to make them look better, but that should be the extend of the Remake.

People have to walk on them, not eat their food off them. You make arrangements for them to be cleaned daily, they will become clean enough soon. There are no short cuts. Nor should we look for one.

Indians have this tendency to take short cuts :P .............. its almost always suicidal.

These works are carried out by Government appointed organizations like the Sulabh is doing. What people can do for restoring these heritage sites ?

Varanasi Nagar Nigam.

They are filled with petty politicians, public apathy and no money. Not to mention corruption that is the standard stuff in UP.

They are jst cleaning the site.. they are not digging it to take govt permission... moreover, it is the failure of the govt. that prompted people to clean the ghats by themselves...

Religious places are there for spiritual needs and ofcourse people will eat food there. But they should keep it clean. Arent there food chambers in Varanasi similar like langars and in Dargahs ? Every Temple do have such chambers.

really?? so 1000 years ago, varanasi was like switzerland, with no garbage and half-burnt dead bodies??

note the difference with a shrine in japan called kinkaku-ji, a riverside construction... so clean and in harmony with ecology... the opposite of varanasi...

Don't pollute Ganga, says Narendra Modi | Zee News

The Prime Minister also called for exploring the possibility of setting up modern, environment-friendly crematoria along the Ganga through private initiative, the statement added.

that is just a immediate technological solution without looking at the entirety of it... typical indian thinking.

like i said in a previous post, most constructions within 500 meters of the river must be demolished... and this will be only part of the solution... what about people bathing in the ghats, thinking it to remove from them diseases ( physical and metaphysical )... that is as polluting as the industries along the river.

the people who come to varanasi for pilgrimage think that they are not polluting but just following old traditions and therefore it is alright.

look at the above pictures of a japanese shrine and compare it to varanasi.

i quote again from my previous post...

to clean varanasi and the river there...

1. put a quota on number of pilgrims... only 10,000 per year.
2. demolish most structures within 500 meters of the river, especially the ghats.
3. after demolishing, ask foreigners to design the riverside.
4. ban holy bathing in the river and the burning of the dead by riverside and subsequent throwing into it.
5. ban people from coming to varanasi and dying there.
6. any hindu wanting to put the ash remains of their dead should be given a special place with a pipe that almost touches the river bed... it is into this pipe that the ash be poured.
7. better rename the city.

the river wasn't created by some culture, it is a natural formation... so any pollution it has is because of the culture that gave it this particular cultural attachment, without thinking that their mysticism is destroying the river and polluting the waters it goes into.

unless these steps are employed, varanasi and the river will remain filthy until india exists.

we have had this conversation before.

Indians have the concept of using a Plate :coffee:

What the Temple authorities are doing ? They should work with the State and Center Government.

Temple authoritative are busy doing the pooja in the temple.

Hasnt State Government and Temple authorities have appointed cleaners ?

How is the Temple authority supposed to pay for that ? Its the govt. job to clean public areas.

Focus on cleaning the Muslim neighbour hoods of India. Focus on cleaning the surrounds of Masjids in India.

Muslims in India are acknowledged to be the dirtiest people in India. I suggest you first worry about your own reputation before commenting on Hindus.

Muslims in India are acknowledged to be the dirtiest people in India.

right... and the rest of india is japan and switzerland.

indian muslims have a lot to discard from the non-islami practices they have adopted over the centuries in india... practices like extreme mysticism... there are 300,000+ mosques in india, the highest in the world... i find that obscene and want 99.99 percent demolished... islam is not about prayer and ritual.

but varanasi... how can anyone be comfortable at the sights it has??

learn from japan at least.

let from japan at least.

Rest of India is just poor and overcrowded, but muslims are just filthy. Stop blaming your past for your filthy attitude and clean your mind first before cleaning your neighbourhood.

Do you know why Hindus don't want muslims neighbours ? ? because they are the real blot. varanasi is a lot better. Now take a hike bud.
