Surprise: Vietnam records trade surplus with China

Look, we want to start the construction of a $50b HSR by 2020. That is about 1/4 of GDP. You see there is little correlation between GDP and investment or GDP and trade volumes. You are free to post trade volumes or other economic news from Indonesia.

Well, I'm not an expert of macro economy. But that sounds unrealistic to me. 1/4 of GDP for HSR is just INSANE.

If not wrong, in the forum, many vietnamese like plane more than HSR, it is very interesting.

So, which country will you choose to build your HSR?

I think it is not investment in a year, but for several years, I think it can be accept, although Vietnam GDP are small, but 50billion dollar it not too much for China, of course the precondition is China win the bidding. But I think they tend to let Japan win. Personally, I also hope they can choose Japan, "better" technology,:-)

It’s an investment over the years. The money won’t be wasted.

Do you think I make joke? HSR is a damm serious thing. Everything is still in planning stage but all should be completed this year. Technology probably comes from either Japan or Korea they both conduct feasibility studies. Besides the north south rail Saigon-Hanoi, there is a railway Saigon-Cantho. A Canadian loan shark is willing to give $5b. Construction may start this year if the government says ok. This section is with slower speed: only 200kmh.

As for China, yes there is a HSR plan linking Hanoi and China. I expect more info will come who pays and when to construct.

Of course, HSR are so attractive, only fool can't know.

China Shanghai-Beijing HSR take more than 200billion Yuan, about 30billion dollars at that time, the distance between Saigon-Hanoi is longer than it, I doubt that 50billion is encough, especially for Japan and Korea.

And the track width in China and Vietnam are different, if don't connect it with China, I suspect that whether your market can support the line. But of course good luck, Vietnam perform much better than India.

This isn't really a big deal, Trade surplus that size is not big enough to be a significant force against China. That being said it does show that Vietnam is developing well, countries without trade surpluses at Vietnam's level of development don't have good futures until they can correct that because that means they are importing more than they export, more exports = more/faster industrialization. But when/if Vietnam becomes a upper-middle income/high income country (still pretty far off), Vietnam won't need a trade surplus at that point either.

Chinese ppl themselves don't buy most Chinese products , they import from Japan , Korea & the west
60% of China's products are consumed within the country. Are you actually that stupid? Oh wait you're Indian. Nevermind.

As usual, Vietnamese counting their chickens before they hatch.

China’s two-way trade with Vietnam was valued at US$93.8 billion, of which exports to China reached US$35.3 billion, up 60.6% and imports from China reached US$58.5 billion, up 16.9% year-on-year.
