THE government on Friday issued the notification for the extension in service of Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, reports a private TV channel. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, in his address to the nation on Thursday, announced that the term of Gen Kayani is being extended for three more years. The extension has been awarded from November 29, 2010 - the date Gen Kayani was scheduled to retire from service after completing his three-year constitutional tenure as Pakistan Armys chief - and will end on November 29, 2013, stated a notification issued by the Defence Ministry.

Didn't the same CJP few days ago said that courts are different/free from 2009.

Moreover, they dont check history before accepting the petition? I mean the very first thing they will check if this happened before?

To me appears to be an effort to divert attention of media and public from NS departure since all three i.e. NS, IK, courts and establishment are being maligned. These issues have successfully diverted public / media attention from the issue. After some days everything will be settled and thats all.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa remarked that the Constitution doesn’t allow the prime minister to extend the service of the army chief. “Only the president can extend his service”, he added.




The Attorney General said the extension was given after the approval from the President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi.

can anybody explain what is the chain of command if COAS goes without replacement? Who will/can lead in hours or days till a new appointment

What happened when COAS Asif Nawaz died ?? Senior-most CORPS commander takes over temporarily or what ??

CGS Lt. Gen. Farrakh Khan administered the officers for 3 days, and Gen. Abdul Waheed Kakar was appointed COAS by the President on the fourth. One of the most controversial appointments in the Army after Zia ul Haq, but he brought stability to the country.

Normally, CGS would have the operational control if there's no COAS.

so Lt. Gen. Farrakh Khan took command due to his position as CGS or he was the senior-most Lt. Gen at that time?

Current CGS Lt. Gen Shamshad Mirza was appointed just yesterday and he is not the senior-most in current lot. My God this is gonna be a huge mess if not resolved properly.

This is about CJ V/s Civilian Government whereby COAS Extension has just become a matter to grill upon and show superiority. Those who think of any bias in extension, are the most clueless minds in respect of Warfare & Current Strategic Issues for any military tactics. The political atmosphere & TV Shows aren't what you see at most rather, there are games into play and hostiles are merely looking for a window of opportunity to make a dent. Has it been the peacetime; there wouldn't be any need of extensions at all.

The new man in the office will need ample time period to understand things at hand in mix of the power being envisaged along with hostilities & foreign military relations/strategic warfare into play. The few may hate Military in default for their own issues but such petty cry is not relevant except for the internet hate. Try to look into the issue beyond political & personal spectrum and weigh the situation at hand, if truly meant to understand as what we are dealing with internally & foreign elements/entities.

He lost his honor and integrity the day he accepted extension , and he divided the institute when he made reshuffling in senior posts yesterday , he created a mess with in the institution which will have long implications, to much said if someone wants to understand,

Justice khosa is another incompetent buffoon who hudes behind terms like democracy, constitution etc to hide his incompetence

He is just trying to save face of judiciary after it is further tarnished after judiciary allowed Nawaz Sharif to go abroad
