Supreme Court Orders Census in Pakistan From March 15th, 2017

The Federal Government in line with the directives issued by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) is considering a population census around either March or April 2017.

The last census was held in 1998 and after that, no census has been held until now.

The Chief Justice said that a census should be held every ten years.

The Council of Common Interests (CCI) is going to be dealing with the matter of holding a Census.

The Chief justice also said that a census holds a foundational role in democracy, and without it, the number of seats in the parliament cannot be decided.

In response to this, the Government submitted a report to the Supreme Court of Pakistan saying that the services of the Army are required to carry out the census, but right now the army is battling terrorists in Operation Zarb-e-Azab.

The Federal Government said that it will suggest an appropriate date for the census after considering the availability of the army. The Government further stated that the Military Operation Directorate shall review the availability of the army in December.

But the Chief Justice said

“Has the Government failed to such an extent that it puts the responsibility of every other job on the army? Census is not like an election which is held in a single day. Census for every city can be held one by one.”

The census, it should be mentioned, is important and integral in formulating the strategies that help nations prosper and make the most of their human capital. Holding the census in a timely manner gives policy makers a clearer view of the bigger picture with regards to a country’ population and its most urgent needs.

SC just make a condition on that there will be no elections till census complete otherwise govt and pppp not interested to do it.

A very valid question !!!

Other than getting their own increment of 150% in salary approved by them politicians in the Parliament within 5 minutes, every job from "Polio Drops" to "Elections" is being done by Pakistan Army.

How Pak Army is supposed to protect the boundaries of Pakistan when Pak Army is called to do every job which should be done by the government?

As per Constitution of PAKISTAN, Election can't happen if a Census is not done, Why isn't done is because there is a Monoploy of the Ruling ELite, & Chief Justice Remarks were "I Think Ruling Elite wants to keep the Status Quo"

I think the chief hit the hammer on the nail here. Why is army supposed to do everything?
When elections, we need army.
When dengue cases, we need military doctors.
When cpec building. We need military engineers.
When capture criminals. We need military.
When by election, we need army.
When building cities hit by militancy, we need army.

What the hell do we have elected officials for if every little thing is going to be done by army or require army presence. They have enough on their plate with CPEC, FATA, Baluchistan and LOC.

Good lord. I can't believe the govt actually gave this excuse. Have some pride and showcase some competency and capability to work.
