It’s been a record breaking last few days for batsmen. First it was Younis Khan who kept hitting centuries at will. Then Misbah-ul-Haq smashed a hundred that equalled the one and only Viv Richards' record of getting it in 56 balls.
There were centuries in each innings for Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez narrowly missed doing it. Then when New Zealand came to replace their northern neighbours, they too found the going tough as the Pakistani batsmen made merry once again.
The Pakistani bowlers who were kept fresh as they watched the batsmen piling up runs then ensured that their efforts matched the batsmen and bowled the team to another easy win.
In India, Rohit Sharma went berserk at the Eden Gardens after having been dropped when he was only four and hammered a record score of 264, getting out to the last ball of the innings. It was an astonishing innings considering he was making a comeback to the Indian team after about two months away with an injury.
The Eden Gardens was celebrating its 150th year, and Sharma's incandescent batting lit the famous venue up like nothing else could. The best part about the batting was that there was no wild slogging but cultured cricketing shots mingled with some audacious ones, and that made the Lankan bowlers look even more hapless.
Virat Kohli was unfortunately run out and missed out on another century, but his handling of the team has been very impressive indeed. Elsewhere in Bangladesh too, the batsmen have been having a good time, but Shakib Al Hasan achieved a rare feat of becoming only the third player after Imran Khan and Ian Botham at scoring a century and capturing 10 wickets in the same Test.
That since 1877 and in more than 1000 Test matches, this has happened only thrice, tells you what a superb deed it is. Shakib is not given the credit that he deserves, but those who play against him know that he is a cricketer who can turn the game with both bat and ball.
Australia and South Africa are playing a one-day series after the T20 series was narrowly won by the Australians. The Australians have injury worries ahead of the big season and will be hoping that the players recover quickly and are fit for the World Cup. Despite the batting heroics, it is Shakib Al Hasan, who, for his all round show, is the Ceat International cricketer of the week.
