In the world's most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia's founding father and first president, Sukarno's daughter on Tuesday converted into Hinduism from Islam.

Sukmawati Sukarnoputri, 69, converted into Hinduism in a ritual called 'Sudhi Wadani' as the ceremony happened at the Sukarno Centre Heritage Area in Bali's Buleleng Regency.

The main religion followed in Bali is Hinduism, however, it is different from the Hindu religion practised in India. Sukmawati's grandmother Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai Srimben, who is Balinese, played a major role in influencing the 69-year-old's decision to convert to Hinduism.

Sukmawati's lawyer, while informing about Sukmawati’s decision, said that the 69-year-old has extensive knowledge of all rituals of Hindu theology as well as doctrines.

A friend of Sukmawati's, who told the South China Morning Post that her relatives gave their blessings for the conversion, said that process was a “demonstration of courage”. The friend said that the conversion demonstrates a shining example of the Sukarno family’s “religious tolerance”.


The 69-year-old had been interested in the Hindu religion for the last 20 years and has read the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the two great Indian epics, the friend said.

Sukmawati's parents played a major role in the independence of Indonesia from the Dutch and Sukarno, her father, became the first president of the nation after Indonesia was declared independent in 1945. He served for 22 years and was deposed in 1967.

In 2018, the 69-year-old had called herself a “proud Muslim” after she was accused of blasphemy for reciting a poem at a fashion event that purportedly insulted the hijab and call to prayer.

Sukmawati mother, Fatmawati, comes from Sumatra and has strong Islamic blood since her mother family is Muhammadiyah activist ( You can call this conservative Islam with strong influence of Wahabi despite also has Islamic modernism influence, this is why Muhammadiyah doesnt make Madrasah, but modern schools and universities with more Islamic studies than state owned/public schools)

Soekarno grandmother is Hindu and this is where I think she has some kind of relation with Hinduism. Soekarno comes from East Java and he also has relative in Bali island.

Central Java and East Java is the last region to get converted into Islam, while Sumatra is the first since it is next to Malacca Straits where Arabic traders were many. This is why during Soekarno regime, many Communist comes from East Java, East Java is close to Bali though.

After Soeharto get the power in 1967, there is Islamization in Central Java and East Java, many mosques were built and we see now many Javanese wear hijab as well, but strongest Muslim are in Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Jakarta, Banten province, and West Java province.

Central Java and East Java is the power of PDI-P party where this party is regarded as nationalist where the strongest is in East Java.

Maha is great right ? It is still being used in modern Indonesian language, but we say Ratu for Queen, but Rani is still being used to name our daughter.

Hindu people is basically people from East Java, they are the remnant of Majapahit kingdom which is the biggest SEA empire where the Kingdom spans from Indonesia into Malaysia, Philippine, and Thailand.

Majapahit from East Java ( Soekarno origin) is defeated by Islamic Sultanate from Central Java ( Soeharto origin) and they migrate to Bali island.

So far East Java is famous as being more aggressive than Central Java where the people in Central Java is famous as calm and very patience. Soekarno is aggressive leader while Soeharto is calm, we can see if they do speech. Each is needed in Republic as more aggressive Soekarno is good during Revolution time despite diplomacy was lead by Islamist power (Masyumi) where West Sumatran leaders become main leaders there. This is because Indonesia was using parliamentary system until 1959.

Interesting that it's legal to leave Islam and convert in Indonesia. A lot of Islamic countries have strict laws that forbid a muslim from doing so, Pakistan too if I'm not wrong ?

It is legal, when Ahok married Native Indonesian, Puput, no body protest it. Puput was Muslim before. She is police officer who guard previous Ahok wife ( now divorce)
