Another Day & Another Milestone marked at 884MW Suki Kinari Hydropower Project

On 28th November 2021, the 2nd Stator for Unit no.3 has been hoisted successfully and lowered into the unit pit. The total lifting weight was 335 Tons which was accomplished with the help of the tandem operation of Bridge cranes. The Project has four (04) generating units and is scheduled to be fully operational for power generation in 2022.

Major structural works of Underground Powerhouse of 884MW Suki Kinari Hydropower Project Concluded.

To witness the major achievement, a ceremony was held in the underground powerhouse on 19th December 2021. The project management team participated in this ceremony and appreciated the efforts and workmanship of Chinese and Pakistani staff who worked day and night to accomplish this milestone.
The structural works were started at the beginning of 2020 and completed at the end of 2021.

During this period, the contractor faced a series of challenges especially deficiency of skilled labor during the epidemic, the cumbersome and complicated cross-over of concrete work, maintaining the precision and accuracy for electromechanical work, and temperature control of mass concrete of units. However, the experienced team overcome such difficulties and completed the task within the scheduled timeframe.

Suki Kinari Hydropower Project is listed among the highest priority Early Harvest Projects within the strategic CPEC. The underground powerhouse is housed with 4 generating units (Pelton) with a total installed capacity of 884MW. After completion, the annual power generation will be 3212KWh.

Another headrace tunnel sections breakthrough with each other at Suki Kinari Hydropower Project just before the ending of year 2021.

Over 2.6km section was started at end of year 2020 and successfully completed on 29th Dec 2021.

More than 90% of excavation and support works of headrace tunnel have been completed so far. The concrete lining is in progress between breakthrough sections of Headrace Tunnel and only two sections are remaining to breakthrough and completion of the whole 23.2km long stretch.

The headrace tunnel crossing through relatively high mountainous terrain and several fault zones and excavation in poor ground conditions was not an easy task. However, the skilled team comprises of International and National members, made it happen.

Another Day and Another milestone marked at Suki Kinari Hydropower Project – 884MW. The design depth of the middle-pressure shaft has been achieved which is 175m deep.

The Suki Kinari Hydropower Project is one of the early harvest projects being constructed under CPEC. It is one of the highest head projects with a gross head of 922m. The penstock system is about 2km long which consists of 6 pressure shafts and 8 pressure tunnels. The overall elevation difference is 744m and one of the “Deepest Pressure Shaft Systems” among World’s Hydropower projects.

The excavation of all Pressure shafts is being done with drilling and blasting. Initially, the guide shaft having a diameter of 1.65m had been achieved. The expansion of the guide shaft from 1.65m to 5.08m was achieved with the drilling & Blasting method. Considering the importance of the structure and geological conditions, strict safety and construction measures were in practice, and successfully completed this structure.
