Till the FGFA's advent to the IAF ranks ... the MKI will remain the IAF's premiere air superiority fighter.

The MMRCA is not being envisaged as something that needs to match or supersede the MKI. Actually it is going to be the IAF's main multirole platform with an advanced (i)BVR A2A and (ii)un-escorted A2G strike capability.

On a side note ...

Generally in all multi-billion dollars arms purchases, the hidden political clout of a super-power (if they are in pursuit of the deal) always plays an important role. The US and India are embarking on a strategic partnership. I believe a political tilt towards the Rhino is a real possibility. It will usher in an advanced US fighter with avionics unparalleled in the sub-continent and it will also open doors for the induction of the latest US BVR and stand off kill munitions for the IAF.

But foremost ... it will herald the cementing of ties between the two countries.

Also ... the US could use the 10+billion USD earmarked for the deal.

Just my 2 cents.

IF U ARE CORRECT then we will all see F18 SUPER HORNETS complete with ANRAAM C7 bvrs and APG79 Aesa radars on the sub continent by 2013.

I expect an obamas state visit in November this year to be very significant for mmrca and the C17 deals

for collection purpose u know some people hve a habbit of collecting stamps............lke that indonesion AF has a habbit of collecting different aircrafts(soon they will ask for lca and j10 also)...............gosh man i hve nvr seen any crazy air force lke thm...........i mean come on man they hve aroud 60 fighter aircrafts in service................and luk at the different platforms that they hve

Personally, I am a big fan of flankers and have even seen the assembly line of SU30 MKI in nashik. 6 planes assembled at a time. These are hell of a beasts when you watch them from pretty close range.

It's more likely that they want to replace older F5 and possibly F16s, so it would make sense.

they got no money to acquire Flankers(Su-27SK/30KI) in sufficient number(not even a squadron of 12 aircraft) and thus opting for cheaper option to modernize their mostly ageing air force
