Jun 27, Colombo: Sri Lanka's population grew only by 0.7 percent over the last ten years to a total of 20,277,597, the Preliminary Report of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing released to the Sri Lankan President Tuesday said.

The report of the 'Census of Population and Housing 2011', carried out between 27 February and 21 March, 2012 presents the population of Sri Lanka, its growth, and the distribution of the population by district, based on the information gathered at the Census.

Superintendent of Census and Director General of Census and Statistics, Suranjana Vidyaratne handed over the preliminary report to President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (26) at the Temple Trees.

Releasing the report, Vidyaratne said the information collected at this Census will be of immense use to plan development activities in the country especially because the census covered the entire country after a lapse of 30 years.

The last census carried out in 2001 covered only 18 districts out of the 25 districts in Sri Lanka. However, compared to the estimated total population of the Census 2001, population has increased by 1,480,340, an increase of 7.9 per cent.

Although the population is still growing, the growth is slower within the last decade compared to the three decades since last comprehensive census in 1981.

Some people say it is better to have a youthful population instead of an ageing population but I'm not an expert on that...

June 27, 2012 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's first countrywide census conducted after the end of a 30-year war shows the population is 20.277 million, the statistics office said, which is lower than earlier estimates.

Earlier estimates put mid-year population in 2011 at 20.869 million with an annual growth rate of 1.0 percent. The census conducted in March 2012 shows that the population growth has fallen to 0.7 percent in the past 10 years.

Sri Lanka's current population of 20.227 is around the level of the 20.217 million mid-year population estimated for 2008.

About 28.8 percent of the population was in the Western Province around the capital Colombo and 5.2 percent was in the north.

Colombo district had the highest population of 2,323,824 and the lowest was in Mullaitivu district at 92,527 in the north of the island.

The highest population growth rate of 1.33 percent was seen in the Anuradhapura District, in north central Sri Lanka.

The lowest population growth of 0.5 percent was seen in Nuwara Eliya district.

Population plunge in Sri Lanka's Tamil base

COLOMBO — Sri Lanka's first national census in 30 years has shown a dramatic 20 percent drop in the population of the Jaffna peninsula, the long-time base of Tamil rebels during the island's ethnic conflict.

According to a preliminary census report released Wednesday, the population in Jaffna, which the rebels once ran as a de facto separate state in the northeast, had fallen from 734,000 in 1981 to 583,000.

Work on the census began last year.

The report offered no analysis, but a Tamil legislator in the national parliament said it reflected an exodus during the fighting between Tamil rebels and government forces from 1972 to 2011 that claimed an estimated 100,000 lives.

"Our estimate is that out of the one million Tamils who fled the fighting and are living abroad, at least 80 percent were from Jaffna," said Suresh Premachandran.

"If not for the war, the population in Jaffna would have been over 1.4 million," he added.

One likely consequence of the new census figures will be a reduction in ethnic Tamil minority representation in the national parliament, which is dominated by members of the Sinhalese majority.

Seats in the 225-member parliament are allocated on the basis of a region's population. Nine seats are currently allocated for Jaffna, but Premachandran said that would now drop to six.
The census put the national population at 20.27 million, about 600,000 down on estimates based on a sample survey carried out in 2001.

Sri Lanka's ethnic conflict ended in May 2009, with the final defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by government forces.

Jun 21, 2012 (LBT) - Data released by the Department of Census and Statistics yesterday showed that the Sri Lankan economy has expanded by 7.9 % at a steady pace in the first quarter of this year. Central Bank sources commenting on this economic growth said that it is better than what they expected.

I think they expect it to be around 7% or less this year.

Sri lanka is an example to follow in many things for other south Asian countries.

However , such a slow growth rate can lead to some trouble later on when there will too many old people and too few young people being burdened with them . For a developing country particularly this can be a problem .

Every South Asian country except India can reduce their population growth.. No offence but India is full of slums and the people inside tem have no knowledge of anything so Indiais slowly becoming more and more densily populated.

7.9% is still really impressive for the first quarter, when you consider China had 8.1% growth in the same quarter, which is a difference of only 0.2%.

So still amongst the highest growth rates in the world.

Also, the maps above are quite interesting. It seems that the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka is the most densely populated, whereas in China it is the Southeast coast.
