A Sri Lankan hardline Buddhist monk who is accused of inciting violence against ethnic minority Muslims and was convicted of contempt of court walked free from jail on Thursday after a presidential pardon.

Hundreds of his followers and dozens of monks waited for hours outside Welikada prison in Colombo to see Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara, but the monk left through a separate gate, which a monk from his group said was due to security concerns.

Some followers carried a distorted national flag which excluded the green and orange color strips which represent ethnic minority Tamils and Muslims who together account for nearly a quarter of the country’s 22 million population.

Rights activists condemned the release of Gnanasara, head of the hardline Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) or “Buddhist Power Force”.

His pardon comes a week after extremist Buddhists attacked Muslim-owned homes, mosques and shops in apparent reprisal for the Easter bombings by Islamist militants that killed more than 250 people.

Ganansara or his group was not involved in the recent violence, police said.

“We said about the impending danger long ago, finally whatever we revealed, has become true,” Gnanasara told reporters, in an apparent reference to the Easter attacks.

He thanked Sri Lanka’s influential Buddhist clergy and President Maithripala Sirisena for his release. There was no immediate answer from the president’s office when Reuters sought comment.

Government ministers and Muslim leaders have accused Gnanasara of stirring up violence against Muslims and Christians before his imprisonment, allegations he has denied.

Hilmy Ahamed, vice president of the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka, said: “I think and hope he will not go back to his extremism.”

The monk was sentenced to six years in prison in August over a 2016 incident when he interrupted a court hearing about the abduction of the journalist in which military intelligence officials were accused.

Gnanasara was also sentenced in a separate case in June for having threatened the journalist’s wife.

Since 2014, the monk has faced accusations in cases regarding anti-Muslim violence, hate speech, and defaming the Koran.

That year Gnanasara signed a pact with Myanmar’s Ashin Wirathu, who once described himself as “the Burmese bin Laden”, in what the duo called a bid to counter regional conversion efforts by Islamists.

“Pardoning Gnanasara is a slap on the independence of judiciary. He was convicted of interfering with court & contempt of court. No civilized nation will lightly pardon such a convict,” J.C. Weliamuna, a rights lawyer, said in his tweet.

@Pan-Islamic-Pakistan Sri Lanka is on the road to become the next Myanmar/Burma....you see this first here. :D

I wonder where all the "supporters" of the SL govt are now?

Will they still support this extremist mindset? How low can they get to justify such reactions from Sri Lankans over a bombing that had nothing to do with the Muslim community of SL?

.
if this dude can help Sri lanka's problem , than why not .. give him a Presidential pardon

.
Sri Lanka needs to retain it's Buddhist identity whatever the cost maybe.

Or it will end up like India.

Sri Lanka's Buddhist identity is not at stake, Buddhism is Lanka's official religion, its the minorities (Tamil/Muslim) lives , properties and religion which is in danger from Buddhist extremists

Missing renowned journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda’s wife, Sandhya Ekneligoda says she vehemently opposes the decision taken by the President to pardon and release from prison the General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara thera.

She said the decision taken by the President violates provisions in the 19th amendment to the Constitution and she would file a case against the decision of the President pointing out it is a violation of her fundamental rights.
Gnanasara thera was convicted and given a six-month jail term on 14th June last year over intimidating Ms. Ekneligoda at the end of a hearing regarding the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda. He was also serving a six-year jail term for Contempt of Court.

If a buddhist protests against Saudi Arabia's non secular character. He will be put to death.

If Muslims feel persecuted then they should leave Sri Lanka for a Muslim country. Neighboring Islamic Maldives can accommodate them.

1) theres a differnce between KSA and SL, KSA is the birth place of Islam, SL is not the birth place of Theravada Buddhism. Sinhalas were once Hindus/pagans/ex-Tamils who converted first to Mahayana Buddhism through Asoka missionary and then to Theravada Buddhism by Therevada monks escaping prosecution in Tamilnadu by saivites /brahmanist (Hindus)

2) Tamil Eelam was never part of Sri Lanka , like Tamilnadu to India, Eelam was merged in Ceylon by the British , hence Tamils (and Muslims) have the rights to protest against Buddhist state terrorism.

3) the protests has nothing to do with SL non secularism , before Tamils and now Muslims are fighting against Sinhala Buddhist racism ..

Arabs were pagans before Islam. So it is not an original Islamic country. According to your logic.

Buddha never created a separate religion. He created new a new dimension to Dharma.

Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism are different pathways leading to same the outcome.

You cannot Abhramic faiths and Dharmic philosophies.

Sri Lankan Buddhist need to do what right for them. Even if they decide to expel Tamil Hindus. I will support them.

Muslims of Sri Lanka need to behave like non Muslims living in Saudia or re locate somewhere else.

Islam owes its origin to KSA, the difference therevada buddhism was imported into Lanka from Tamilnadu. By similar logic, original natives of India were not Hindu, central Asian/Persian's Aryan Vedic brahmanism was forced upon them and their original Dravidian/Tribal religion deceptively appropriated into Vedic Brahmanism.

Buddhism is not a new dimension of Hindu dharma, as it rejects many aspects of Hindu dharma - the major being the authority of the Aryan Vedas, the foundation of Hindu dharma. Only delusional Hindus believe theres love between Sinhala Buddhists and Indian Hindus

Disappearance of Buddhism from India – An Untold Story

To combat Buddhism and revive the tottering Brahminical hegemony, Brahminical revivalists resorted to a three-pronged strategy. Firstly, they launched a campaign of hatred and persecution against the Buddhists. Then, they appropriated many of the finer aspects of Buddhism into their own system so as to win over the “lower” caste Buddhist masses, but made sure that this selective appropriation did not in any way undermine Brahminical hegemony. The final stage in this project to wipe out Buddhism was to propound and propagate the myth that the Buddha was merely another ‘incarnation’ (avatar) of the Hindu god Vishnu. Buddha was turned into just another of the countless deities of the Brahminical pantheon.

Eelam is Tamils homeland and Sinhala Buddhists know that (refer Mahavamsa) they tried to be funny with Tamils (i.e Sinhala Only Act) and got badly burnt, after 30 yrs civil war, Tamils turn their Dhamma dipa into a Beggar dipa/island.

Sinhala Buddhist skin heads (monks) try to take over a Hindu temple (by destroying the temple) to expand / construct a new Buddhist vihara/temple, failing to buy over the Hindu temple land.

You are mistaken as to your view on pre-Islamic Arabia. Paganism is not an Islamic idea (Kufr is not the equivalent of pagan or infidel). The differentiation here was associating others with Allah i.e. associating idols as intercessors to Allah. The word itself was not alien to them in fact they often invoked it in speech and in writing.

Slap on the wrist and let him go. This is the weak nature of SL to Buddhist fascist monks. Shame on them.

Will he be forced to pay to rebuild Muslim shops and mosques? No.

Will he be forced to apologize to Muslims? Never.

Man you remind me of a buddy I had in my highschool, a huge fan of Zakir Naik. Never lied. Never afraid to speak the truth. Justified 9/11. Justified Islamic invaders. Justified persecution of non Muslims in muslim countries.

Just continue being honest for the rest of your life
