Rosanna Flamer-Caldera from Equal Ground

Sri Lanka has, for the first time ever, acknowledged the non-discrimination provisions in its constitution protect people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

The statement came in responses from the Sri Lankan Government to recommendations for reform during the country’s review by the UN Human Rights Committee.

Executive Director of Sri Lankan lgbti group Equal Ground, Rosanna Flamer-Caldera, says it’s a positive outcome which takes the sting out of anti-gay laws in the country’s Penal Code.

“This is the first time that the Government has made statements of this sort and we will be sure to follow up with them at the first opportunity.”

Equal Ground worked with Kaleidoscope Australia, a group committed to promoting and protecting the human rights of lgbti people in the Asia Pacific region, on a shadow report on lgbti rights which was submitted to the UN Human Rights Committee.

“We congratulate the Sri Lankan Government for acknowledging that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity is unconstitutional,” Kaleidoscope Australia President Dr Paula Gerber says.

“While it is disappointing that the Sri Lankan Government did not address the ongoing criminalisation of homosexual conduct (both men and women), the official response nevertheless marks a significant change in tone, which will hopefully in turn lead to further reform.”

I don't know why you are taking a news from GayNZ.com seriously. We will certainly object if any for these mentally retarded people.

. .
What ??.. Are you equating a gay person to being mentally retarded ?? Now thats the most retarded thing i've heard in a while
There will be no such rights given for those in near future. It has a strong opposition than you think.

penalty = If there is a punishment, fines and whipping (Section 365A). Forced governmental psychological homosexual treatments also possible.

In Sri Lanka, homosexuality (same-sex romantic/sexual activity) is considered to be illegal under a broad provision dealing with, "gross indecency", a vestige of colonialism, and no national legislation exists to protect LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) people from harassment or discrimination.
The current Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, affiliated Sri Lanka Freedom Party reportedly opposed allowing Norway’s new ambassador to Sri Lanka, a woman, bring her wife into Sri Lanka. It has also been reported that the President felt that same-sex marriage in Sri Lanka would ruin the Buddhist heritage of the nation.
The ruling center-right United National Party generally opposes LGBT-rights, at least when it comes to the subject of same-sex marriage.

The term ponnaya is a negative word often used against transgender people or effeminate men.

Psychological Help/Treatment
Some private clinics in Sri Lanka claim to be able to "cure" patients of their homosexuality, although the World Health Organization does not view homosexuality, in itself, to be a mental illness.

Family and marriage
Sri Lanka family law does not recognize same-sex marriages or any similar sames-sex civil union. LGBT people who have come out to their family often report being verbally or physically harassed.
In 2013, some Sri Lanka and foreign news reports talk about the "first" gay wedding in Sri Lanka, although there were some conflicting reports about the details. The ceremony was held in 16th of August in a House in Rathmalana area, and was raided by the police for violating "anti-corruption" laws. Details about the raid are somewhat conflicting. Some reports claim that the police raid was not because it was a gay wedding, but because the participants were under legal age or had some ties to prostitution. Other reports say that this was government crackdown on a gay couple .

Western propaganda
how is a gay person having the need to be gay be western propaganda?

There is western propaganda but there are real issues. Those are two different things.

In SL we have never had an anti gay culture. Gay ppl have remained gay even publicly or privately. People just consider them as a private issue.

Are you just against gay people or reject it because some western countries are superheading the movement for gayrights? I have news for you western countries like US is one of the most anti gay countries. So you are in the same boat with US...

There are gay people who appear in public in Sri Lanka without any problem but unfortunately the *** backward 17000 years old society looks down upon them. How can being gay means supporting Western propaganda? Do gays only live in the West? Recently I saw an old picture of Sri Lanka that showed a gay couple. Being gay is not anyone's choice, it's natural and it is horrible to deny their rights for their sexual orientation.
