SRI LANKA PRESSES AHEAD WITH NEW FIGHTER PLANS

SL will buy Jf17 .......

Gripen is too expensive, and has AMERICAN engine.

It's almost done deal .....

Politically it does not make sense. Why buy JF-17 from Pakistan? Pakistan has no naval presence in that region or a military strong enough to help SL. If they need political relationship and they are okay with pissing India off, better idea will be to go directly with China then. Why to involve Pakistan at all. Sure as hell China will be having a fighter plane to fulfill their requirements. Or better yet, help them in quickly building a plane that is tailored for their requirement, like they did for Pakistan. Pakistan is a too distant and too small player in that region.

If they need a fighter and need it fast - it will make sense to buy it directly from USA (F-16) - a lot of them are lying around with US due to F-35 replacement and can be sold at a discount and fast OR Russians - Mig 29 comes to mind.

Pakistan is one of the most strongest militaries in the world with immense experience.

Pakistan was vital in helping Sr Lanka defeat the indian LTTE

Pakistan also has arrangements with a number of countries such as Nigeria, Tanzania to resurrect their air forces,
Nigerian airforce was at the point if collapse until Pakistan stepped in and provided assistance, hence they are buying super mushaks and JD-17s

Jf-17 was jointly developed by a Chinese company and Pakistan, PAF having decades of experience with excellent fighter jets having access to top line fighters in GCC and having taken on both the USSR and Israel in air combat and won

Unlike many of the fighter planes in the world JF17 is being developed as multi role platform with no strings attached and host of weaponry that mostly will be available to the customer

Dont let indian delusions of grandeur confuse you about the Pak military

Sri Lanka has options of China, US and Russia. Where does pakistan stand?

If they buy from Pakistan, they will need to buy weapons from China and/or South Africa (Python etc) and engine and its maintenane from Russia.

Also, cheaper though refurbished F-16 throws JF-17 out of the ring. Weapons for F-16 are all available from the USA.

Again, why to go with Pakistan if they can easily go with China -and chinese are wooing them big time- and get better deal in terms of weapons and complete end to end maintenance. Not to mention an important political alliance.

You mean Russia, China and US dont have multi role platform? Actually JF-17 comes with strings attached. Russian engine. Chinese weapons. To operate JF-17 in war you need blessings from Pakistan for platform, Russia for Engine and China for weapons. Thats too many people to keep happy. Better idea, buy a complete platform from Russia or China or USA.

Dont let indian delusions of grandeur confuse you about the Pak military
Huh? Where is India? India tried selling Tejas but I doubt it will work out. Tejas = US Engine / Russian weapons / Indian airframe. Too many strings again. Lastly, Tejas is not in full swing production to export. HAL is no where near to produce those many aircrafts.

JF-17 is jointly developed by china and Pakkistan
bringing Pakistan is a polite way to trade with China
as chinese nuke submarine in SL sparked uproar in Inidan defence circles
the idea might be to get involved with China indirectly without provoking India
as India knows there is never gonna be a Pak Navy so strong that its presence in SL will make a difference to them in near future
but lets just assume they want to buy super mushak trainers and want training and other stuff

ni
na na na
unlike US
even russian weapons do not come with strings attached
i mean they do if the exporter can but look at the position of exporter as well
exporter is not strong enough to pressurize SL
Pak might lose more and that might be the reason SL is not buying the same platform from China

Imagine what a deal with Pakistan will cause. I doubt SL gives too much damn about it.

Rather than go around in a circle replying and counter replying

Understand that Pakistan is able to help in the integration of a wide array of weapons for JF 17s if you buy American plane then you have to buy expensive American weapons and are at risk of sanctions, if you buy Russian then the supply of parts, and maintenance problems becomes a issue

With JF 17 they have a plane where they can request as a customer a plane that is set up to their requirements where at customers request Pakistan can integrate weapons from Pakistan, china, south africa or elsewhere at customers request even their own if they choose to develop

Pakistan -Sri Lanka have a strong working relationships which could facilitate purchase of JF 17
It is not confirmed whst plane sri lanka will buy but there is no reason why it csnt be JF 17

Even more polite way will be to buy from Russia.
well no russian jet is as cheap as JF-17
and if is , is not that capable as Thunder is multirole
I doubt SL gives too much damn about it
exactly thats why i m saying it might be training and small scale stuff not big platforms they are unlikely to buy JF-17 only due to politics of the region otherwise JF-17 is more than enough and more than cost efficient given Lankan needs

I appreciate your idea of replying directly, but it still leaves my main point - with JF-17 you are still dependent upon vendors from different countries - for engine and weapons atleast. As far as customization goes, sure that is a good idea, but then Russia and china are equally good if not better than Pakistan at that. Remember, China did a lot of customization for Pakistan and Russia, in its own time did a lot for India in Su30-MKI.

JF-17 wont have maintenance issue as it is very cheap and easily maintained
they can choose weapons with no string attache
the only problem remains is spares
i doubt if Pakistan sell it they will stop supplying spares
but the actual fact is that Pakistan is marketing the Jet and SL has shown interest as it has previously but have not discussed purchase
look at t this way
maybe it is a pressure tactic by SL to negotiate with Inida to interfere with its internal matters
as previously SL did rejected JFT due to their internal involvement

Not for 12 planes they won't

Actually Sri Lankan President himself thanked India for helping Lanka defeat LTTE.

Also Lanka approached, India first for arms and ammo but unfortunately India couldn't supply as it would have caused protests in Tamil Nadu.

"India had told us they were not in a position to sell or send offensive weapons or even equipment like radars and basic communication equipment to meet our requirements," Lankan Army chief Sarath Fonseka said. This, he said, had led Colombo to approach countries like Pakistan, China and Russia for meeting its urgent needs.
He said while Islamabad told Sri Lanka it had limited amount of ammunition and could not meet the requirements projected by Colombo, similar equipment from Russia, Ukraine and other countries "proved for us to be very costly".
"So we had no other option," Fonseka told
NDTV, but to obtain heavy weaponry from China.

o_Oo_Oo_Oo_Oo_O
Sure the sri lankans wanted indian arms to destroy indian supported terrorists

However in reality it was Pakistani and chinese military assistance that destroyed the LTTE with sri lankan military resolve of course

Next you will be claiming India helped NATO bring down the USSR

Then how the heck will Pakistan do customization for just 12 planes? Pakistan has mastered manufacturing of the JF-17 but I doubt design and other modifications can be done without involving China.

Your missing the point of the JF 17s and Pakistanis ability and resolve

I am not doubting Pakistan's resolve. But design and development part was done by China right? Ofcourse with funding and work sharing with Pakistan.
if that was the case then this jet would have been yet another MiG 21 derivative.
get over it that we designed the jet as much as China did we decided to partner with china because it had the infrastructure in place and thus sped up the process otherwise it would have been a late combat aircraft like yours which despite getting the engine weapons and avionics from USA, France, Russia and Israel was delayed for decades
