The police, in a coordinated effort with the Chinese police, arrested 100 Chinese nationals in Colombo and the suburbs yesterday over money laundering.

Police spokesman SSP Priyashantha Jayakody told the Colombo Gazette the arrests were made based on information provided by the Chinese police.

Jayakody said the 100 Chinese nationals were arrested for crimes commited in China and not in Sri Lanka.

“The Chinese police sought our help top arrest these people. We got a court order yesterday and arrested them after we identified where they were staying,” the police spokesman said.

In May over 400 Chinese were arrested from several countries over a transnational telephone fraud which included 17 arrests in Sri Lanka.

Chinese mainland police, assisted by Taiwan police, worked with their counterparts in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Fiji to bust the large cross-border telephone scam gang.

The CID in Colombo arrested 17 Chinese in Rajagiriya over the scam.

they just based in foreign countries and their targets are all in China, so the Chinese police cannot easily track them, unless the host country's security department will co-operate in full force.. this shows those countries are willingly to help China to catch those fraudsters...i believe there are lots in India too as its famouse of its call centers

COLOMBO: Police in Sri Lanka have arrested 100 Chinese nationals for currency fraud in a string of raids in and around the capital Colombo, officials said Saturday.

"They have defrauded their countrymen by making them... transfer money to accounts maintained in Sri Lanka in the names of those arrested," Prishantha Jayakodi, a senior superintendent, told AFP.

Police said that the 74 men and 26 women were arrested Friday night at their residences in and around the capital following a court order. Those arrested were to appear in court later Saturday.

Thousands of Chinese work in Chinese-funded development projects across the island. Many more arrive on tourist visas and work in the hospitality industry. China has been investing heavily in Sri Lanka as it enlarges its presence in South Asia.

In June, the tropical island nation opened Sri Lanka's first Chinese-built port, for which China loaned money. The port was seen as a strong symbol of Beijing's investment and interest in the region. China is also building a second port in Colombo and Chinese firms have pledged investments totalling $50 billion spread over the next 10 to 15 years, according to Sri Lanka's trade ministry.

Regional power India views Sri Lanka as firmly within its sphere of influence and has been concerned about China getting a foothold there and in other surrounding countries.

Sri Lanka need stricter norms. Right now it should focus on allowing those companies which employ local people more.

It will help in employment rate, create demand for educated, skilled locals and most importantly will help in transfer of knowledge from Chinese to Sri Lankans.

@Skyline why is this news. Anyway Srilankan Govt. will deport or relese them after receiving CCP call, to China. Srilanka is in desperate need for investment and for that it is even daring India Govt.

some times truth hurts isn't it and make you people post like the above comments.

If someone has done an illegal activity they can enjoy our jail, it does not matter which country they represent. Most of foreign prisoners in our jail are Indians, then Pakistanis. We do have Chinese too.

Lets see the drama which happens in the coming days about the so called Chinese frauds. Indians in Srilanka is because majority are Fisher men who do not know the exact boundaries.

Fishermen cases aren't serious, we do release them keeping 2-3 days. Most of Indian prisoners who are in jail are related to drug smuggling cases and illegal activities in SL.
