Nov 23, Colombo: Health Education Bureau of Sri Lanka's health Ministry has focused on establishing breast milk banks in the country, a senior health official said.

Sri Lanka's National Coordinator for Nutrition at the President's Secretariat Dr. Lalith Chandradasa says the initiative to establish a breast milk bank is aimed for the benefit of infants who lack proper lactation due to various reasons including overseas employment of mothers.

This was revealed as the Sri Lanka Report on Lactation in World was launched at the Presidential Secretariat this week.

A breast milk bank pasteurizes and stores donated breast milk for babies whose mothers cannot supply sufficient milk.

Pediatricians advise mothers to provide only breast milk to the infants until six months of age.

The official pointed out that the community based breast milk banks in countries like Philippines have benefited the children to make them healthy. He said such banks could be established with small investments.

Sri Lanka however, tops South Asia in exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and according to statistics available Sri Lanka has achieved a high EBF rate of 76 percent for 0 to five month old babies.
