Pakistan president to visit Sri Lanka

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari will visit Sri Lanka next month in a bid to boost trade and security cooperation, an official said Sunday.

Zardari will be accompanied by foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and a group of Pakistani businessmen, a foreign ministry official said.

"The two days of meetings will centre around security and trade cooperation between both countries," the official said.

Pakistan is a key supplier of arms to Sri Lanka and also offers training to Sri Lankan security personnel.

JF-17 Deal Coming up!!!!

I think JFT deal may be signed in China rather than in Pakistan as I think CAC will be the main contractor for SLAF version of JFT rather than PAC as it is already in full swing for filling PAF order. So i suspect a development on Srilankan President's visit to China

Let me sum it up

12 Kfirs
First delivered to SLAF in 1995/1996 with the airframe age of 17/19 years old. By now these are 32/34 Years old airframes.
Later in 2005 more were upgraded delivered by now which are atleast 37/39 years old.
(could be replaced with FC-1/JF17 as sources say the Visit to China might pen down a deal similar to russian easy loan based to replace aging Kfirs whose airframe is already very old.)

12 F-7BS/FT-7/GS
First delivered in 1991/1992, later in 2008 more were delivered, possibility of 3 F-7BS to GS upgrades could take place or might not and drag a few more years.
Replacement candidate FC-1/JF-17 fits the bill and covers A2A/A2G role.

7 Mig-27M
Slightly upgraded delivered in 2000, of them a few crashed. When delivered the airframe was already 18/19 years old from the serial 1982/1983. Currently the airframe life is 28/29 years old.
Future replacement could be SU-30/SU-35, could be by 2016 and onwards.

1 Mig-23UB-conversion trainer
Delivered in 2000 with an airframe life of 23/24 years old at that time and now 33/34 years old. Could be retired in couple of years.

Mig-29SMT
12 On order
Replacement with unlikely as they are the addition.
These Mig-29SMTs are to be refurbished taken out of Russian inventory of first generation Mig-29s would be heavily upgraded as per SLAF requirements.

SLAF future may look as:

Good post but regarding SU-30 and SU-35 I see this happeneing if the Russian expand credit facilities to the SLAF. Given the millitary relationships of China and Srilanka expanding. We may also see J-10s in Srilankan colours (but obviously that depends a lot upon the appraisal of PLAAF and PAF about the aircraft). The reasons are that for creating monopoly over Southeast Asian Markets, China has the enough money to afford such deals. I mean such a huge pile of FX at the disposal of Chinese Policymakers will certainly be sufficient to implement arms on credit policy.

Sri-Lanka might opt for J-10B or lets say China might give access to SLAF after deliveries start to PAF Sir Lanka could become the 3rd Nation. Interestingly the price is the factor as old or refurbished mig-29s are at $29 million and J-10B at $40 Million, then again loan based acquisition might work out here. Since J-10B is a platform easy to maintain single engine highly maneuverable fighter jet truly 4.5 Gen by 2015+ onwards.

If a 600-700 million loan similar to mig-29 facilitated by russia could make sri lanka buy if not atleast 10-12 units.


China's premier Fighter J-10A/B might never be sold to NKorea/vietnam in the future. Bangladesh might also opt for J-10B but after the govt is changed as the current govt is pro india and obviously after PAF the first customer receives it.

However Interesting thing may be as J-10B induction kicks off from say end of this year (as J-10B is expected to join PLAAF at the end of this year), PLAAF will surely have to choose around 2015-2017 that whether to upgrade then J-10As or sell them at substential discount to friendlies and induct brand new J-10Bs. So in this case, I can suspect a similar case may be as US EDA (not exactly the same) so SLAF may end up with modified J-10As in around say 20 Million or something

But the Tejas fighters are deployed there for now only to confirm whether all is well in their functioning or not. Until the "testing phase" that lasts a few years after a brand new type jet is inducted is over, it will remain there. In short, it will be very unlikely to used for combat purposes since down south, there's no trouble.

The Sinhalese far-right need to keep their apprehension down because their apprehension is going to make them cost lot of taxpayer's money. On what grounds do they feel threatened from India? LTTE is long gone, relations are back to good; even your president welcomed the new warm ties and the new start.

Instead of maintaining high-end fighters like MiG-29s and for that matter even JF-17s if your government is interested, won't it be better if you have fast ground attack prop-based? fighters. Sri Lanka's geography is such that any terror group or any adversary has to come from the surface only because it is an island country. So this means that it is very unlikely that you will face a entity that has an aerial arsenal of weapons aimed at your air wing.

And you think India (with whom Russia enjoys a multi-billion cross-industry business relation) will allow Russia to sell high end Su-35's to Sri Lanka, even if Sri Lanka manages to buy them.

On second thoughts, I doubt if Sri Lanka really has the funds for all this stuff, they thought of Mig-29 only after Moscow offered them a soft loan for the deal.

exactly, what aids my suspecion is the fact that J-10B though has an enhanced A2G, but senior chinese posters citing insiders indicate that A2A has been enhanced manifold so essentially J-10B is a better Air superiority fighter than J-10A which would certainly tempt PLAAF to give it a shot and dispose its fleet J-10As (well this is my personal openion I am not discounting the fact that PLAAF may look for MLU of J-10A, this is just a possible scenario)
