Sri Lanka Air force Retires Kfir jets

The No 10 Fighter Squadron, consisting of Israeli-built Kfirs jets, considered the vanguard of the SLAF operations against the LTTE since 1996, is unlikely to fly again.

The SLAF grounded Kfirs on March 1, 2011 after a mid-air collision during a rehearsal destroyed two aircraft killing one pilot, while the other ejected.

SLAF Commander Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrema ordered a high level inquiry into the accident. The SLAF headquarters is in the process of finalizing the report before it being handed over to Air Marshal Abeywickrema.

SLAF spokesman Wing Commander Andrew Wijesuriya said since the conclusion of the war in May 2009, the role of the service had changed.

Responding to a query by The Island, Wijesuriya asserted that the task of the Kfirs jets had diminished and the service would have to gradually phase out aircraft and equipment, which weren’t required in the post-war era.

Wing Commander Wijesuriya emphasized that the SLAF would maintain assets needed to meet today’s requirements, including maritime patrolling, surveillance and internal & external transport. According to him, there would be a full review of the service as part of the overall strategy.

The Kfir jets carried out thousands of raids targeting the LTTE since 1996, and it achieved tremendous success during the August 2006-May 2009 campaign, which brought the LTTE to its knees.

By year 2000, the SLAF acquired eight more Kfirs and one two-seater trainer, thereby increasing the aircraft inventory to 15 Kfirs, including two twin-seater trainers.

The No 10 Squadron had been tasked with providing close air support, air interdiction, battlefield air interdiction, maritime air operations and air interception.

Sri Lanka's defence needs will move from a purely operational perspective to strategic.

While with time Sri Lanka will become more self sufficient in their ability to deal with external threats with a re-vamping of an ambitious fleet of air arm, In the worst case scenario the support of SCO ally’s could easily become an adequate security arrangement.

As a Pakistani, I love Sri Lanka. Even during the '65 and '71 war with India, Sri Lanka helped Pakistan by providing a naval base to refuel operations between East and West Pakistan, and India took punitive measures due to that.

Pakistan's also under the heavy burden of dealing with a foreign-fueled insurgency, Sri Lanka had to deal with that too. Sri Lanka and Pakistan have a common history of many acts of friendships, and we have a common meddlesome neighbor.

Why not SAB gripen??? It will come little costlier but superior than JF17 .... Why not old F16??? F16 is tried and tested one...

They can buy 4 JF-17s for the price of one Gripen ! , F-16s don't come with support platform and Sri Lanka will be relying on the US for its defense which is a bad idea.

SinoPak consortium can provide not only air craft but also ground crew training and equipment , armament even awacs if needed the supply would be consistent and with least amount of strings attached.

Wrong, They can buy 2 JF17 not 4 (in clean configuration)... China is giving you at lower price coz you are co-developer of JF17. China mey not offer the same price for Sri-Lanka...

Alone JF17 will not be enough if India go hostile, And lanka don't have Nuke and F16 to complement its JF17... Keeping all this in mind I think Lanka must go for 40-50 Gripen, if their economy support they can go for 1 Squad of Rafael as well..

JF17 , J10 or LCA is not good buy for them...

These new planes have potential in African and Latin American country.. Not in Lanka and Bangladesh...

Hi all , Im new here, so just giving my idea...
Lankan Ranger remember there was a time when SLAF were interested in Mig-29's, Is it called off or they speculating a purchase of JF-17's
:peace:

The bold statement says it all.
India go hostile..
this is the reason they should buy jf-17 because it is cheaper in cost and maintenance is low.
F-16 is useless for them because it can not operated until US wants.

It remains to be seen what would SLAF choose now since the war is over. As a replacement will it be the FC-1 or MiG-29 or Gripen or maybe a series of air defense systems like Bangladesh recently did.

Goood, they should replace it with JF-17..Cheap, Operational, reliable and does the job right!

 Indians can give truly neutral analysis

I believe the article actually hints at reducing the number of aircraft since they are not needed anymore. So we might not see the Kfirs get replaced, at least not any time soon.

yeah sure with IPKF occupation force and the indian support of ltte it is truly neutral..... it is a predatory power with no morals and no scruples....witness the the indian war crimes in east pakistan and occupied kashmir.....
