Sri Lanka 60th in Propsperity. Comparison to South Asian Countries + China.

Sri Lanka was ranked 60 out of 142 countries on the Legatum Prosperity Index.

The sub-indices include, country's Economy, Entrepreneurship & Opportunity, Governance, Education, Health, Safety & Security, Personal Freedom and Social Capital.

Sri Lanka ranks 35 on the Social Capital sub-index, which measures willingness to help strangers and trust in strangers.

Sri Lanka has seen big improvements in its Economy scores, which have contributed to the country's improvements in the overall Prosperity Index.

The Economy sub-index has risen twenty eight places to 74th since 2009, as a result of increases in capital per worker, gross domestic savings, perceived job availability, and satisfaction with access to adequate food and shelter.

A whopping 82% of people say they can rely on others in times of need and 57% believe Sri Lanka is a good place to live for immigrants.

Compared to Sri Lanka's 60th place, India declined to 106th and overtaken for the first time in 2013 by Bangladesh which ranked at 103rd. Nepal ranked at 102nd and Pakistan remains low in the rankings at 132nd with progress hampered by security-related challenges. China was ranked 51.

It is more equivalent to compare Sri Lanka to East Asia and South East Asia rather than South Asia.

Anyone know why this is?

For example SL ranked higher than Russia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Phillipines; and slightly less than China, and 16 places off Malaysia. The next South Asian country is 43 places lower.

Given the high Economic,infrastructural and HDI stats.. Lanka's comparisons should be always against East Asian and ASEAN tiger economies.. It's pointless comparing with the likes of India where the gulf is way too wide.. Apart from the Maldives no other South Asian even come close to development figures SL enjoys

I agree! But how did this happen in the first place? Considering India and Sri Lanka had basically identical average conditions even just 40 years ago. It would be an interesting case study.

The Indians lounged about, played cricket, watched Bollywood. Then after dinner of state subsidized grains, they strutted around bellowing their super power might to all neighbors.
Sri lanka simply and quietly won a decisive civil war, put heads down and built a better country.

As long as Sri Lanka is friendly towards China and allow her to invest in your country, SL's economy will continue to expand. Btw, SL is many times cleaner when compare to India. That is a bonus to attract FDI.

India has a large diversity with its own pros and cons to deal with.....Good to see Sri Lanka making giant strides in the same concern but still comparing just to make oneself feel good wont take you anywhere - India might be ranked among the lowest but still its a fact that there has been a substantial improvement in these sorts of indications in the past decade and it continues to do so. Slow but steady - and with more and more GDP expenditure on the same - the scenario is ought to transform in a positive way....

Sri Lanka too plays cricket mate ! Indian team is slightly ahead of SL atm ( still SL reached finals of last two WCs !) but an average Sri Lankan is lot more talented in cricket than an average Indian..Also more athletic ..Tamils nadu has more people than SL..Compare tamil nadu XI vs SL team ! or Kerala vs SL team..who would win ?

Why bother.. If we are to develop further we need to aspire to be those who are better than us not those who are worse off.. There is absolutely no reason to bring in India for this comparison

I cannot press enough like buttons to agree more. It's the same story with India as well. Indians should set a goal and have in comparison a country which have superior stats. And then have concrete measure to achieve that plan.

If I may add, Sri Lankans tend to have better attitudes towards Women, which is a big factor, they are also less arrogant and generally chilled out people.

It's not India everywhere, I mentioned most South Asian countries and China as well as Russia.

Yet the road to development is so long, I hope we can see Asia reaching parity with the West in living standards within our lifetimes!
