The Springfield Armory X-treme Duty (XD) is a licensed version of aCroatian HS2000 pistol. The Croatian HS2000 has been imported to the United States since 1999. In 2002 the Springfield Armory obtained licensing rights for this pistol to sell it in the USA. It allowed the company to enter the market of polymer-frame striker-fired pistols. The Springfield Armory changed the name of this weapon and introduced many manufacturing improvements. Also the company added various models with different calibers, sizes, barrel lengths and finishes. The Springfield XD pistols are used by the US police and law enforcement agencies. These weapons are also available for civil customers.
The XD pistol is available in various calibers, including 9x19 mm Parabellum, .375 SIG, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.
The Springfield Armory XD has some similarities with the Austrian Glock 17. Also it has some design features of SIG Sauer pistols. Nevertheless it is an independent design and has a distinctly different trigger action and many other differences.
This handgun has a polymer frame and is striker fired. It is a short-recoil operated weapon, that fires with locked breech.
This weapon has no manual safeties. There is an automatic firing pin safety and an automaticM1911-style grip safety. The last mentioned locks the slide and prevents it from cycling, so the gun can not be loaded if the grip safety is not fully engaged. There is also a drop safety that prevents the striker from releasing if the pistol is dropped or exposed to impact. Manual thumb safety is available as an option on some models.
This pistol has a cocked striker indicator. There is also a loaded chamber indicator.
This weapon is fed from double-stack magazines. However there are certain compact versions that use single-stack magazines. Magazine release button is ambidextrous.
This weapon has fixed sights. It is available with self-luminous night sights. This feature allows to shoot more accurately in low light conditions.
The Springfield Armory XD has an accessory rail for mounting tactical flashlights or laser pointers.
