South Korea May Win Indonesian Contract For Thee Submarines
South Koreas Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME) has confirmed that Indonesian Ministry of Defence would sign a agreement worth $1.1 billion for the construction and delivery of three 1,400-ton Chang Bogo class Type 209 diesel-electric attack submarines.
DSMEs Communication Director Jeong Seong-dae said has said, We have launched talks to sign a submarine contract with Indonesias defence ministry and [Navy] and Both sides have long-discussed the sale of Korean-built submarines, and now we are in the final stage of fine-tuning detailed requirements and contract terms.
South Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has already sold 16 T-50 Golden Eagle fighter jet trainers at cost of $400 million to the Indonesian Air Force.
Chang Bogo class Type 209 will be produced by the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering with help from the German Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW).
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has already refurbished Indonesian Type 209/1300 KRI Cakra submarine in 2004-05 and refurbishing of the KRI Nanggala submarine will be completed by July 2011.
