South Korea Exports Submarines to Indonesia

A South Korean shipbuilder said Dec. 21 it had signed the country's largest-ever weapons export deal, worth $1.1 billion, to sell three submarines to Indonesia.

It also marked the first time that South Korea has grabbed a deal to sell submarines abroad, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering said in a press statement.

Under the contract, Daewoo will deliver the three submarines, each weighing 1,400 tons, to Jakarta by the first half of 2018.

Each of the submarines can carry 40 personnel and will be equipped with eight weapons tubes to fire torpedoes and guided missiles.

The deal brings the volume of South Korea's defense exports this year to an all-time record $2.4 billion, more than double the amount from a year ago, the state-run Defense Acquisition Program Administration said.

It is the second major defense deal between the two countries. In May, the South's state-run Korea Aerospace Industries agreed to export 16 supersonic T-50 Golden Eagle trainer jets worth $400 million to Jakarta.

Indonesia is increasing its Navy which is good but now it should increase its Air Force it don't have Air force which can result in disaster for NAVY because now a days every Navy needs Air Support so they should now have at least more than 300 above Fighter Planes of 4.5 Generation

But why Indonesia need military build up? Does Indonesia face any threat from any one?

Indonesia is a large country and they should have a proper military and that region in future will not be a very peaceful region

Terrible purchase by Indonesia, they might as well buy those submarines straight from Germany instead of the inferior copy version from Korea.

Because Korea agreed for transfer of technology. The TOT will be started from the beginning and the third submarine will be built in Indonesia. It's Indonesian gov't policy to produce our own weapons as many as we can since we're a big country. So it's not a terrible purchase at all.

How can you be so sure that they will be inferior copies?

And how about Vietnamese gov't policies? Always buying weapons from other countries?

who said we don't? :)

Indonesia is buying Korean T 50 and Brazilian Super Tucano, getting 24 F16 for free as a temporary air defense before KFX/IFX joint research and production with Korea is ready to produce, and buying new Shukois... I don't see that we're not building up our Air Force :)

let me correct you:

South Korea assembles submarine with 100% German technology and parts, and transfers it to Indonesia.

sorry, I'm confused, are you correcting me or anybody else?

First, as far as I'm concerned, South Korea doesn't do merely assembly. They manufacture the submarine based on a license from Germany. The manufacturing process will be closely learned by Indonesians in Korea and the third submarine will be made in PT PAL Indonesia (whether PT PAL will manufacture or assembly, I'm not so sure)... Indonesian gov't made it clear that after this project, they are going to manufacture several submarines by themselves (with a license I suppose) until the "minimum essential force" is met..

But why Indonesia need military build up? Does Indonesia face any threat from any one?

Indonesia isn't building up its military, they're only trying to meet the so called "minimum essential force" necessary to guard its area...actually those 3 submarines (and 2 other older submarines) aren't enough based on that MEF..

Actually Indonesia will be the richest and most powerful Muslim economy due to the fact that it is already as large GDP wise as Turkey but it will easily grow quicker for decades to come as it is much less developed than Turkey. It's huge land area, natural resources and population put it in a good position to grow into a very strong power.

Indonesia needs a create a seriously powerful military to go with it's economic size.
