He is not from Ang. He was made king of Ang by Suyodana to attain equal Kshyatriya status and compete with Pandavas.

You Telugu mate? Yes I have seen this one.

The Telugu classic I most enjoy is Maya Bazaar. Fascinating movie and storyline (a side story to the Mahabharat).

I of course originally watched the (original) black and white Tamil version and was used to Gemini Ganesan being Abhimanyu till I later watched the original Telugu movie (with different actor!).

@django brought up divine weapons, there is a funny scene here with them (between Ghatotkach and Abhimanyu...who do not yet know each others identity):

Special effects still hold up pretty well given this was from the 50s!

Maya Bazaar is a classic. It has now been remastered in color. SVR & Savitri were great actors.

@django This movie (Karnan) was the southern interpretation of the Mahabharat story (from Karna's viewpoint - he is the protagonist).

@Joe Shearer if you have never been yet...you should try make a trip to the great Hoysala temples of Belur + Halebedu...you will see where the Vijayanagar architects drew much inspiration from! They truly compete with anything us low country folks built in our river valleys and deltas!

The rock lathe pillars are very unique...never done before or since!

Karna was the ultimate tragic hero or anti hero..
1. Abandoned at birth by mother
2. Insulted by the people in power.
4.Cheated by powerful persons..
4. Longing for love, affection and respect thorough out life.
5. Betrayed by own teacher.
6. Supporting a cause and a friend..Despite knowing that it's wrong.
7. Ultimate heart braker was rejecting the proposal of her mother to side with her and become the rightful heir of throne..

Despite all this :
He spared the life of 4 other pandav numerous times .
Did not take the help of immoral means ( using the snake) to kill arjun twice..
Finally got killed by balant cheating by Arjuna..

I'm SHOCKED at you. I married a Hebbar Iyengar; these temples were among the first I saw after returning to the south (I was born in Bellary, my mother in Kurnool, and she and her brothers used Tamil to keep their conversations private in front of us Sassenachs, but this was the first time I came south as a sentient human being). My wife's people came to Karnataka when they were expelled by Kulothunga Chola in around 1000 AD (at the instigation of the Iyers - HAH!), and settled in four villages, that are well-known even today. Her ancestral village had a little jewel of a temple in the Hoysala style; unlike the monumental ones at Belur and Halebidu, this was a live temple.

PS: I presume you are a Kongu Nadu guy. If you wander down to Coimbatore, if the Guild of Service building is still standing, check the foundation stone. It was laid by my grandmother, my mother's mother, a personal friend of Ida B. Scudder, who came south as a barefoot bride from Bogura and ended up with a Kaisar-i-Hind medal for social service, and played tennis with the Governor's wife. Don't ask me which Governor; I only remember a sepia picture of her in demure tennis apparel, with several other ladies, mostly British, and labels below.

Well I haven't visited some very well renowned temples of my area one might assume ...there are so many all around TN! So I wouldn't assume likewise for anyone else (just in off chance you havent been there!).

Yes our iyer/iyengar disputes is a long sundry list ...I will have to ask the folks about this Kulothunga episode...and see if they know of any of it.

During the (Belur-Halebid) road trip I went on (I was 8 years old) with extended family, we actually stopped by at a number of villages...an indeed you are correct about the smaller temples in the area (now that I think back on it).

A lot of the time I remember those kind of temple road trips, I enjoyed the smaller towns and villages more than the main star titles. When we went to Vaitheeswaran, Chidambaram and that whole kaveri delta area...we did stop by the temple of Nandanar story (where the devotee being Dalit, was not allowed inside temple....and in his prayer so he could see the Lord more clear, the Statue of Nandi moved to the side - as described by the great Saivite poets Sundarar and Appar...this all was around 7th/8th century time). Nandanar himself is renowned Saint of course (an early example of such prominent Dalit integration in Tamil culture)....but it sure was nice to see the temple of the story in such small village still (and yes I saw the Nandi is offset to the side for myself ).

I can kind of go on about many such stories!...truly village and town temples are my favourites!

Yep I remember you telling me this before (when I first told you I am Coimbatore guy)...didnt know about the tennis bit though haha ...eternal blessings to such a lady!
