new news in bangla version

source:Steps taken to introduce commuter trains (old)

Bangladesh Railway (BR) has taken initiatives to introduce commuter trains on different routes for facilitating its short-distance passengers.

"To this end, the BR would procure 20 diesel electric multiple units (DEMUs) from China," Director General of Bangladesh Railway Abu Taher told BSS yesterday.

He said the government would finance for procuring the DEMUs in which Tk 426 crore would be spent.

"An agreement to this effect will be signed with China's Tangshan Railway Vehicle Company Ltd tomorrow," Taher said.

He said commuter trains would be run by the DEMUs for short-distance passengers and there will be at least 300 seats in each train.

BR Additional Director General (RS) Khalilur Rahman said the DEMUs would reach the country within 15 to 20 months.

He said the DEMUs would ply on different routes including Dhaka-Narayanganj, Dhaka-Joydevpur, Dhaka-Tangail, Dhaka-Bhairab Bazar, Chittagong-Feni, Chittagong-Dohazari, Dinajpur-Parbatipur-Rangpur and Lalmonirhat-Parbatipur.

Few points not understood.

Running short distance Passenger trains ? Are they not run already ?

300 passengers ? for a compartment with seats only - no sleeping berths the avg No of seats are 70 -80 depending on the configuration. Can be more with minor changes in design & layout.

This would mean at best five compartments being pulled by an engine. Shouldn't it be increased so that each train carries at least 1000 passengers ? Only then will short travel be worthwhile.

In any case if it is a non electrified section, most of the passengers will sit on the roof as they always do in S Asia.

Is it the first time DEMU trains will be running in BD ?

DEMU's are actually like Local trains running in Mumbai only difference is they have diesel engine on both sides.

The news does not give any specifications for these DEMU engines, nor do we know the horsepower. But, I do not think, an imported engine, however small it may be, cannot pull 10 coaches with a total of 1500 passengers or more. But, the BD commuting trains will do better without long trains with less frequency or shuttles. Rather, it is more helpful if they run more frequently, say, 5 trips/hour, with less number of coaches. This is how the passengers will wait for less time. These trains will carry daily passengers from this station to that station, short distance, probably no more than 20 km each way each line.

In my opinion the decision of using less number of passenger coaches with higher frequency makes sense, at least for the time being. When the country develops more, there will certainly be many additions of both engines and coaches.
