Snowfall in Chitral drops mercury

CHITRAL: A number of villages situated at the foothold of Hindukush mountain range forming the Upper Chitral district and Lot Koh valley of Lower Chitral received snowfall here on Wednesday.

Five to seven inches of snow fell in villages of Shagrom Terich, Rech, Khot, Melp, Oveer, Yarkhoon, Laspur valley and Baroghil in Upper Chitral, and Begusht, Sha Arkari and Gobor in Lower Chitral.

The snowfall dropped the mercury considerably and people were seen wearing warm clothes.

Haji Sharbat Khan, a former councillor from Shagrom Terich, told Dawn on telephone that the valley was in the grip of severe cold after the snowfall confining the residents indoors. He said the snowfall in lower altitude Chitral villages had last time occurred in late 1960s, and it will prove ruinous both for the cereal crops and fruits in the area.

The snowfall halted vehicular traffic to the valleys of Terich, Oveer, Melp and Rech.

it meant in-terms of degrees, it didn't actually mean mercury as an element.

Not surprising. Northern Chitral Valley has the latitude and the altitude to make snowfall even in June. Check out my Baroghil Valley video thread--in which I said it maybe the most beautiful exotic place in Pakistan. Well, 'the most beautiful' is subjective but certainly the most exotic place IMO.
PS. Mt. Mitchell, NC is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River--about two hours from my American home. It has about the same latitude/altitude as Chitral's north. And it can snow there even in the middle of summer.

پاکستان میں جون کا مہینہ شدید گرمی، حبس اور لو یعنی گرم ہوا کا موسم سمجھا جاتا ہے لیکن شاید حالیہ تاریخ میں پہلی مرتبہ صوبہ خیبر پختونخوا کے ضلع چترال کے بعض علاقوں میں جون کے مہینے میں برف باری ہوئی ہے۔

یہ برفباری تحصیل مستوج میں لوٹ اویر، کھت اور دیگر قریبی علاقوں میں گزشتہ دو روز میں ہوئی ہے۔ مقامی لوگوں کا کہنا ہے کہ ان کے اندازے کے مطابق دو سے چار انچ تک برف پڑی ہے ۔

اس علاقے میں محکمہ موسمیات کی کوئی آبزرویٹری نہیں ہے جس وجہ سے برف باری کی صحیح جانچ نہیں کی جا سکی۔

گرمی میں برف پڑنے سے موسم بہتر ہوگیا ہے اور کم سے کم درجہ حرارت بھی گر گیا ہے۔

چترال میں محکمہ موسمیات کے عہدیدار منظور نے بتایا ہے کہ برف اپر چترال میں پڑی ہے جہاں اطلاعات کے مطابق درجہ حرارت 4 ڈگری سینٹی گریڈ تک گر گیا ہے جبکہ ادھر چترال شہر میں بھی موسم بہتر ہوا ہے جہاں کم سے کم درجہ حرارت 13 ڈگری سینٹی گریڈ ریکارڈ کیا گیا ہے۔

انھوں نے کہا کہ جون کے مہینے میں درجہ حرارت میں یہ غیر معمولی کمی دیکھی گئی ہے۔

مقامی لوگوں کے مطابق جون کے مہینے میں اچانک برف باری سے فصلوں، باغات اور مال مویشیوں کو نقصان پہنچا ہے۔

مستوچ کے تحصیل نائب ناظم فخرالدین نے اپر چترال سے بی بی سی کو بتایا کہ اس علاقے میں آبادی کا انحصار گرمیوں میں فصلوں اور میوہ جات کی کمائی سے ہوتا ہے اور اس مرتبہ سب کچھ ختم ہو گیا ہے۔

ان کا کہنا تھا کہ اس علاقے میں خوبانی، ناشپاتی اور سیب کے باغات کے علاوہ گندم، اور جو کی فصل ہوتی ہے جبکہ سبزیوں میں آلو اور مٹر وافر مقدار میں ہوتے ہیں۔برفباری سے درختوں اور فصلوں کے پتے گر گئے ہیں اور پھل ضائع ہوگیا ہے۔

ان کا کہنا تھا کہ ان کی زندگی میں ایسا کبھی نہیں ہوا کہ جون کے مہینے میں برفباری ہوئی ہو۔

اپر چترال کا علاقہ مستوج پہاڑی سلسلہ ہے اور سردیوں میں یہاں برف پڑتی ہے جبکہ گرمیوں میں لوگ مال مویشی یہاں لاتے ہیں۔ اس موسم میں چارہ بھی اس علاقے میں ہوتا ہے جو پھر سارا سال ان کے جانوروں کے کام آتا ہے۔

ان کا کہنا تھا کہ لوٹ اویر کا علاقہ موسم گرما کی چراگاہ ہے اور حالیہ بارشوں سے بیل اور دیگر چھوٹے جانور ہلاک ہوئے ہیں جن کی تعداد سیکڑوں میں بتائی جاتی ہے۔
